Job Title: Bookkeeper (SMBs and Franchise Accounting) Location: Remote Employment Type: Full-Time | US Time Zone Coverage (ET/PT/CT overlap) About ConnectedStars ConnectedStars is an operations and talent partner for SMBs and multi-unit franchises across the U.S. We build reliable back-office systemsfinance, people, and processesso owners can scale with confidence. The Role Youll be the day-to-day owner of franchise bookkeeping for multi-unit clients (restaurants, salons, fitness, retail, home services). Youll run clean books at the location and consolidated levels , ensure timely period closes , and deliver unit economics that franchise owners use to make decisions. Key Responsibilities Multi-Unit Bookkeeping Own daily posting and month-end close for multiple locations; maintain standardized chart of accounts by brand . Reconcile bank/credit card/merchant accounts and third-party delivery or marketplace deposits (e.g., DoorDash/Uber Eats, Shopify/Amazon) including fees/chargebacks. Match POS sales to deposits and resolve over/short cash variances. POS & Systems Integrate and reconcile data from Toast, Square, Clover, Lightspeed, Revel, Shopify POS (as applicable). Maintain clean bank feeds and mapping rules in QuickBooks Online (preferred) or Xero; support exports from FranConnect or similar franchise systems. Revenue, COGS, and Inventory Record daily sales summaries (net of discounts, comps, refunds, taxes, tips). Track inventory/COGS and waste; post landed costs; help implement perpetual or period inventory where applicable. Manage deferred revenue (e.g., gift cards, prepaid packages/memberships) and redemptions. AP/AR & Cash Control Run three-way match for vendor bills (PO/invoice/receipt) where used; code shared costs across locations. Process payments, credit memos, and vendor statements; manage W-9 collection and 1099-NEC vendor lists. Set and monitor cash-handling controls and deposit cadence. Payroll & Labor Prepare payroll inputs (hours, tips, PTO) and reconcile payroll journals; coordinate with providers (ADP, Gusto, Paychex). Track labor % by location/department and accrue payroll taxes/benefits as needed. Compliance & Taxes Prepare sales/use tax workpapers across states; coordinate e-filings (experience with Avalara/TaxJar a plus). Support CPA with 941/940 , state filings, and annual returns; maintain audit-ready records. Reporting & Unit Economics Deliver location P&L, balance sheet, cash flow and consolidated roll-ups on a 4-5-4 retail calendar or monthly close. Build simple KPI packs: sales mix, AOV, labor %, COGS %, prime cost, ad-fund %, royalty %, occupancy %, EBITDA . Flag anomalies and actionable insights (price/margin leakage, fee creep, under-depositing, rising food/labor trends). Qualifications 3+ years in SMB or franchise bookkeeping (multi-unit strongly preferred). Proficient with QuickBooks Online (classes/locations, bank rules, recurring journals); Xero a plus. Hands-on with at least one POS listed above and marketplace/aggregator reconciliations. Working knowledge of U.S. GAAP basics , sales tax, payroll journal entries, and multi-state nuances. Strong Excel/Google Sheets skills (pivot tables, lookups, basic modeling). Detail-obsessed, organized, and comfortable owning deadlines across multiple clients. Nice to have: Avalara/TaxJar , FranConnect , inventory methods, and experience with restaurant/retail cost controls. Degree in Accounting/Finance preferred; relevant certificates (QB ProAdvisor, NACPB/AIPB) are a plus. What We Offer Competitive salary with performance incentives.
