Read more about our work and projects Project Specific Details This project is a scale-up of a previously evaluated study tested across multiple countries by J-PAL invited researcher Noam Angrist and colleagues (Angrist, Bergman, Matsheng 2022; Angrist et al 2023). The state government of Karnataka plans to scale up a remote tailored instruction approach for grades 3-5. The governments Ganitha Ganaka programme was launched based on the evidence supporting a tailored instruction approach that uses phones to connect high-quality instruction and tutoring with students and parents. Within the 2024-25 academic year, the government aims to reach approximately 456,000 students across 93 educationally low-performing administrative blocks. As the government intends to implement this programme at a large scale this year, we aim to embed quick process research activities that will support the government (a) with actionable insights on optimising programme implementation as they seek to achieve scale, and (b) set up large-scale monitoring systems within the government to effectively monitor and enable different levels of the education system to use of programme data for feedback and course correction. The RA will be responsible for a series of primary data collection exercises. The RA will work with the Research Manager and Principal Investigators, who will guide and supervise them in various tasks. The PIs for this Project are Noam Angrist (University of Oxford) and Sharnic Djaker (University of Oxford). The findings from this scoping study will enable discussions for a future randomized evaluation, as a new vocational education curriculum is rolled out in grades 11-12 in the next academic year. Project 3: India Data Lab PIs: Ananya Kotia (LSE) The India Data Lab (IDL) is an initiative to harmonize unit-level microdata from India's key household and firm surveys, specifically the National Sample Surveys (NSS) and the Annual Survey of Industries (ASI). In collaboration with LSE, IGC, and NITI Aayog, the IDL will integrate these datasets into the National Data and Analytics Platform (NDAP). Project Specific Details This project is a scale-up pilot of a previously evaluated study done in collaboration with the Government of Haryana. It was found that a package of interventions combining well-connected local immunization ambassadors, targeted reminders and incentives to caregivers increased routine immunization by approximately 55%. This project aims to test the effectiveness of a new model for identification of ambassadors to spread information on routine immunization. The study will focus on verifying the centrality of gossips/ambassadors selected through a model of phoney surveys conducted by the NGO Suvita. The study will be conducted in a sample of 450 villages. During the first phase of the study, gossips will be identified by field surveys by J-PAL, phone surveys by Suvita and through random selection by Suvita from Suvitas database. The second phase of the study would be information dissemination. In each of the 450 villages, J-PAL SA surveyors would seed the information to a maximum of five ambassadors who would in turn inform the villagers to register onto a text messaging service to receive information on immunization. The centrality of the nodes will be assessed through the number of people who register on the service. The RA will be responsible for a series of primary data collection exercises. Summary of the project Smallholder farmers in low- and middle-income countries have historically been unable to access quality information to inform their decisions during the cultivation cycle. This research project will devise experiments and combine insights from behavioral, agricultural and development economics to understand the key factors that influence farmers decisions to contribute information to crowdsourcing efforts, and act on information obtained from their peers. We will conduct a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to explore the prospects of crowdsourcing in the context of pest incidence on crops among smallholder farmers in India. The RCT will provide insights on the following research questions: What key factors motivate farmers to share accurate information from which others could learn (including financial and non-financial incentives) What factors would influence farmers willingness to listen to, trust, and act on information derived from crowdsourcing Does acting on crowdsourced information help improve yields Responsibilities (including but not limited to): Manage the implementation of research activities for the project, ensuring adherence to appropriate rigor, policies, timelines, and budgets. Manage financial and human resources for the project. Guide teams on the use of evidence-based approaches and ensure that PxD maintains the standards for technical appropriateness and rigor. It was found that a package of interventions combining well-connected local immunization ambassadors, targeted reminders and incentives to caregivers increased routine immunization by approximately 55%. This project aims to test the effectiveness of a new model for identification of ambassadors to spread information on routine immunization. The study will focus on verifying the centrality of gossips/ambassadors selected through a model of phoney surveys conducted by the NGO Suvita. The study will be conducted in a sample of 450 villages. During the first phase of the study, gossips will be identified by field surveys by J-PAL, phone surveys by Suvita and through random selection by Suvita from Suvitas database. The second phase of the study would be information dissemination. In each of the 450 villages, J-PAL SA surveyors would seed the information to a maximum of five ambassadors who would in turn inform the villagers to register onto a text messaging service to receive information on immunization. The centrality of the nodes will be assessed through the number of people who register on the service. The RA will be responsible for a series of primary data collection exercises. The RA will work with the Research Manager and Principal Investigators, who will guide and supervise them in various tasks. What are we looking for We seek a dynamic professional with 4-5 years of experience to lead our data and AI-driven projects for the public good. This role involves working closely with our government partners (senior bureaucrats, ministries and various departments), industry experts and multilateral institutions as well as managing a multidisciplinary internal team of technologists, data strategists, domain experts, designers and researchers, to ensure high-quality execution of impact-driven projects. The ideal candidate will have experience navigating public sector environments, a strong understanding of data and technology systems, and a keen ability to translate strategic goals into executable project plans. Key Responsibilities Project Leadership & Planning Lead end-to-end planning and execution of projects, from kick-off to closure.
