Senior Software Engineer - Backend (Java)

As a Senior Software Engineer on PayPal s Feature Studio team, you ll solve complex technical problems and build scalable infrastructure for 400+ internal users. You ll work with engineers, data scientists, and product teams to enhance platform performance and reliability for key machine learning and decision systems. This role lets you shape system architecture and drive innovation pivotal to PayPal s AI and Risk strategies.

We develop systems that automate feature lifecycle management, enabling users to define, schedule, and monitor batch features independently. Prioritizing scalability, governance, and integration, we optimize model workflows to fuel data-driven innovation. Collaborate with cross-functional partners to build vital infrastructure for PayPal s machine learning and decision systems.

• Delivers complete solutions spanning all phases of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) (design, implementation, testing, delivery and operations), based on definitions from more senior roles.
• Advises immediate management on project-level issues
• Guides junior engineers
• Operates with little day-to-day supervision, making technical decisions based on knowledge of internal conventions and industry best practices
• Applies knowledge of technical best practices in making decisions

• Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience and a Bachelors degree or equivalent experience.

• Design and develop scalable backend systems.
• Optimize system performance and reliability.
• Mentor junior engineers.

• 5 + years of backend development experience and a bachelor s degree in computer science or related field.
• Proficiency in at least one backend language (Java, Python, Ruby on Rails)
• Advanced proficiency in backend development with either Java EE frameworks, including experience with Spring MVC, or Hibernate.

• Experience designing and implementing RESTful services, focusing on scalability and reliability, using Java.
• Proven ability to mentor junior engineers and contribute to code reviews and design discussions.
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure)
• Experience with databases (SQL, NoSQL)
• Strong understanding of database design, including SQL and NoSQL databases, and experience with ORM tools.
