Position Summary

The Senior Resident in Pulmonology is responsible for delivering high-quality care to patients with respiratory diseases under the supervision of senior faculty/consultants. The role includes clinical management, procedures, patient counseling, academic participation, and involvement in ongoing departmental research and teaching activities.

Key Responsibilities

1. Clinical Responsibilities

  • Manage OPD, IPD, and emergency cases related to respiratory and critical care.
  • Diagnose and treat conditions such as asthma, COPD, pneumonia, ILD, TB, sleep disorders, and other pulmonary diseases.
  • Provide care to critically ill patients in ICU, including ventilator and non-invasive respiratory support management.
  • Participate in daily rounds, formulate treatment plans, and monitor patient progress.
  • Attend and manage pulmonary emergencies including acute respiratory failure, hemoptysis, severe asthma attacks, etc.

2. Procedures

  • Perform and assist in pulmonology procedures such as:
    • Diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopy
    • Thoracentesis & pleural biopsies
    • Endotracheal intubation
    • Arterial blood gas (ABG) sampling
    • Ventilator management
    • Sleep study interpretation (optional based on department setup)
  • Assist consultants during advanced interventional pulmonology procedures, if available.

3. Documentation & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate and timely patient records, clinical notes, and discharge summaries.
  • Ensure adherence to hospital policies, clinical protocols, and medical ethics.
  • Participate in morbidity/mortality meetings and clinical audits.

4. Academic & Teaching

  • Teach and mentor junior residents, interns, and medical students.
  • Present clinical cases, seminars, journal clubs, and participate in academic sessions of the department.
  • Engage in research projects and contribute to publications when required.

5. Patient & Family Communication

  • Provide counseling and education to patients and families regarding diagnosis, treatment plans, and preventive measures.
  • Address patient concerns with empathy and professionalism.

6. On-Call Duties

  • Participate in on-call rotations for emergency and ICU coverage.
  • Respond promptly to emergency calls related to respiratory and critical care.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • MBBS with MD/DNB in Pulmonary Medicine/Respiratory Medicine/Chest Medicine.
  • Valid medical registration with state or national medical council.
  • Prior experience as a Junior Resident in Pulmonology or Internal Medicine is preferred.
  • Strong clinical knowledge, decision-making skills, and ability to manage critical care cases.
  • Good communication skills, professionalism, and ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
