The Head of Basic Design and Engineering for Shipbuilding Operations is responsible for overseeing the fundamental design and engineering aspects that shape the initial framework of shipbuilding projects. This role ensures that all basic designs comply with regulatory standards, functional specifications, and project timelines, creating a robust foundation for detailed engineering and construction. By managing a multidisciplinary team, the Head of Basic Design and Engineering collaborates closely with project management, production, and quality assurance teams to optimize design efficiency and address technical challenges. The purpose of the Head of Basic Design and Engineering role is to lead and guide the shipyard’s basic design and engineering efforts, establishing clear technical frameworks for each shipbuilding project. This role focuses on developing initial designs that align with the project's functional requirements, performance criteria, and budgetary considerations. By overseeing concept validation, regulatory compliance, and collaboration with classification societies, the Head of Basic Design and Engineering contributes to the shipyard’s reputation for delivering quality, efficiency, and innovation in ship design. This position is essential to ensuring that all basic engineering and design plans support the shipyard’s long-term goals for growth and operational excellence. The ideal candidates should possess the necessary knowledge, skill and experience to do the design & drawing of piping standard components & drawings like plot plan, equipment layouts, interconnection diagrams, piping general arrangement drawings, piping isometrics. 3 – Accountabilities To carry out Basic Engineering, Detailed Engineering, Material Take-off, Preparation of technical specification documents for project tasks Experienced at Repair/New Built/Conversion of ship and Offshore Structures, Rig with specialty in Piping, Engineering & Systems domain. Should be conversant with the major international codes used in marine & offshore. Understanding customer requirements and work closely with all engineering teams from technology development / concept development, estimating the project timelines and complete assigned projects on time with adhering to engineering standards & Process Coordinate well with interdisciplinary disciplines as well as with Clients and Vendors, Participate and present with critical design changes & concept reviews, other technical discussion with engineering team Prepare list of deliverables with man hour estimation for performing project tasks. Capable to handle both Analysis and drawing solely. Should be efficient in drawing skills. Perform feasibility checks for all kind of piping modifications. Review of fabrication drawings, MTO etc. Weld specification (size and type), Weld procedure review, Material substitution review Formulate objectives and set targets for various Section Managers and Engineers functioning under his charge. Checking of Hull Nesting Drawings, Profile Cutting Drawings, Hull Part Definition Drawings, Block wise drawings for Bending Jigs and Fixtures, block wise drawings for Lifting, Rigging and Transportation Estimate and prepare plans for optimum utilization of the resources to generate the Production drawings and take all the necessary initiatives to provide technical guidance to Production/QC on as and when required basis. Assess project requirements during FEED stage and prepare the BoM/MTO to help the commercial team for bidding the new projects. Provide technical advice / guidance to the in-house design team and clients on matters relating to technical feasibility, applicable Class Rules, National or international standards and Flag requirements in areas of technical expertise. To build and maintain a good relationship with our clients and internal stakeholders. To discuss and present the deliverable with the internal / external client and be able to suggest solutions where appropriate. Responsibilities as a minimum include design and engineering activities to develop ship preliminary design, functional design, detailed design, and integrating the work of structural, mechanical and electrical disciplines in compliance with Class rules and other applicable industry standards. Develop and utilize test procedures including computer modelling and scale models. Interpret and analyze data and test results Planning and process control for effective flow of Dwgs. & Documents. Design management support and project monitoring. Interaction with Consulting firms for design out sourcing activity. Successful implementation of Quality policy, Skill Multi-tasking recommendations, Performance appraisal and counseling of his team. Proactively advise higher management towards improving/setting up of Infrastructure / Design Facilities and design related software’s of mega projects.
