As of 2022-23, the program operated in 5,192 communities and reached approximately 386,000 children. The program targets two subgroups of primary school students with different program components: students in grades 1-2 vs. students in grades 3 and above. For grades 1-2, the intervention includes two main components. First, Pratham volunteers support students through in-school activities. Second, Pratham volunteers support the mothers of these children through mother groups. For grades 3 and above, the intervention consists of an adaptation of the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) program evaluated in earlier J-PAL studies. This study speaks to three key issues related to Indian childrens (lack of) mastery of foundational skills in mathematics and literacy. First, Prathams Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) program seeks to support students in grades three and above by remedying their lack of foundational skills. A key question is whether this learning gap in later grades can be addressed earlierin grades 1-2before it fully develops. A prior J-PAL study on Prathams work in Assam has also documented that the TaRL programs effectiveness can be strengthened by combining the grade-3 intervention with a community-based component. Here, for the program on grades 1-2, the effectiveness of a similar, complementary component for the earlier grades is of interest: mother groups. Third, we are particularly interested in whether the effects of the early-grade intervention either fade out or persist over time and whether the two interventions (grades 1-2 and 3-5) complement or substitute each other. Lastly, because of the muted impacts found by the earlier evaluation, and given Prathams subsequent changes to its program in Assam, we will also measure the effect of the revised grade-3 intervention. We will investigate whether this intervention encourages farmers to use canal water for irrigation, thereby substituting away from groundwater extraction and lowering energy consumption. We are seeking a Research Manager to oversee a portfolio of three research projects. Two field-based projects explore the role of artificial intelligence in enhancing judicial and bureaucratic state capacity in India. The third project is building a harmonized data repository of Indian firm and household microdata. This position offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in managing pioneering projects at the forefront of economics research and public policy. Key responsibilities include contributing to the design and implementation of assigned projects, leading stakeholder engagement, mentoring and supervising the research team, managing budgeting and operational tasks, overseeing reporting processes, and handling contracts and grants management. We are seeking a Research Manager to oversee a portfolio of three research projects. Two field-based projects explore the role of artificial intelligence in enhancing judicial and bureaucratic state capacity in India. The third project is building a harmonized data repository of Indian firm and household microdata. This position offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in managing pioneering projects at the forefront of economics research and public policy. Key responsibilities include contributing to the design and implementation of assigned projects, leading stakeholder engagement, mentoring and supervising the research team, managing budgeting and operational tasks, overseeing reporting processes, and handling contracts and grants management. We are looking for a proactive individual with proven management experience and familiarity with applied economics research and capable of working with multiple stakeholders to achieve project objectives. The candidate should be prepared to thrive in a dynamic organizational environment and demonstrate high levels of integrity and commitment to our work. The successful candidate will join a team of Principal Investigators (PIs) and Research Assistants (RAs). They will gain direct experience collaborating with policy partnersspecifically the NITI Aayog and various Indian courtsimplementing surveys and field experiments, and conducting rigorous data analysis. Project 1: Artificial Intelligence, Government Litigation, and Bureaucratic Decision Making PIs : Daron Acemoglu (MIT), Ananya Kotia (LSE), Utkarsh Saxena (Oxford) Working with Indian government agencies, this project studies whether artificial intelligence tools can be used to reduce inefficiencies caused by excessive government-initiated tax litigation in India. Project 2: Artificial Intelligence and Judicial State Capacity PIs : Ananya Kotia (LSE), Utkarsh Saxena (Oxford) This project seeks to address India's substantial judicial backlog of over 50 million cases by evaluating the impact of integrating AI-driven tools like transcription, translation, OCR scanning, and case flow management software in courtrooms in a large Indian state. The intervention aims to test the impact of such tools on case resolution times and judicial decision-making. Project 3: India Data Lab PIs : Ananya Kotia (LSE) The India Data Lab (IDL) is an initiative to harmonize unit-level microdata from India's key household and firm surveys, specifically the National Sample Surveys (NSS) and the Annual Survey of Industries (ASI). In collaboration with LSE, IGC, and NITI Aayog, the IDL will integrate these datasets into the National Data and Analytics Platform (NDAP). By cleaning and standardizing these complex datasets into a single, analysis-ready repository, the IDL aims to significantly streamline research efforts and enhance empirical studies on India's economy. Qualifications Master's degree in Economics (or bachelor's degree with relevant work experience). At least three years of relevant work experience Experience in managing randomized controlled trials is required. Knowledge of Stata (or any other statistical tool) is required. Ability to work in a team, manage multiple projects on the ground, and be self-motivated. Some experience conducting social science or economic field research, including supervising data collection, teams of field workers, survey design and implementation, financial reporting, and data management Responsibilities Develop survey instruments and data request documents for data collection Create technical documentation for internal and external audiences Conduct background research and literature reviews Draft content for reports to policymakers, academic papers, grant proposals, research protocols, and other project documents Supervise and mentor Research Associates Work with J-PAL South Asias Finance team to ensure project budgets and project spending is kept in check, funder deliverables are prepared and attended to, and PI requests are prepared on time. In addition to their primary responsibility managing projects and stakeholders in India, the (Senior) Manager will also provide management support for DILs work scaling this intervention in other low- and middle-income countries through partnerships with funders, multilaterals, NGOs, and government officials, as well as work with the faculty director (Michael Kremer) and other researchers on related research. The role level (Manager or Senior Manager) will be determined based on the candidates experience. Senior Managers will be expected to assume greater leadership responsibilities, such as representing DIL at high-level meetings. We are looking for candidates interested in starting as soon as possible. This is a full-time position for one year with the possibility for renewal based on project needs. Responsibilities 50%: Lead policy outreach for and scaling of high-quality weather and seasonal forecasts in India, with guidance from Professor Amir Jina and Professor Michael Kremer: Develop and maintain strong relationships with policymakers, funders, and other partners. Lead project planning and oversee project execution. This will include managing Research Professionals and Research Associates, presenting research insights to non-technical audiences, and anticipating and solving problems. Coordinate with team members to ensure alignment across workstreams, identify and develop opportunities for expansion, and regularly report on progress. 20%: Provide management support for policy outreach and other activities scaling high-quality weather and seasonal forecasts in other low- and middle-income countries: Liaise with multilateral development banks, donors, country officials, and other relevant stakeholders to assess opportunities to disseminate high-quality weather forecasts in other low- and middle-income countries. Develop proposals and concept notes to support DILs efforts to develop and grow initiatives related to the dissemination of weather forecasts and digital agriculture more broadly. 20%: Provide management support for research projects, such as A/B tests on disseminating high-quality weather forecasts to farmers: Coordinate with DIL researchers and other partners on study design, implementation, and potential scale-up of projects. Manage relationships with implementing partners. Handle administrative responsibilities such as IRB, new proposal development, contracting, budgeting, donor reporting and communication, grants management, and project finance 10%: Provide input on cross-cutting lab activities or DIL public goods as required. Educational Qualifications and Work Experience We expect the most competitive candidates will have a Masters degree in a related field, and least 3 years of relevant work experience for the Manager role, and at least 5 years for the Senior Manager role.
