Job Description Summary Verification & Validation Engineer, will be responsible for the delivery of the of HVDC Controls & Protection Verification and Validation team’s activities on time / as per Project Scheduled through proper coordination between Project and department. Must be flexible with working hours and willing to travel in order to support projects globally for extended period. Qualifications And Requirements Engineering degree or equivalent including power systems and power electronics subjects or proven equivalent knowledge and experience in HVDC business for 3+ years. Experience in the position of Verification Engineer in High Voltage field, with experience as a Control & Protection design Engineer. Good knowledge of overall 400kV substation, HVDC system (LCC/VSC/SVC) including control and protection system is essential. Experience of developing and working with PSCAD and RSCAD models is essential including knowledge of Overall HVDC System Operational Behaviour. Experience in technical leadership with ability to manage team of validation engineers Strong communication skills with a fluency in English language. Willingness to travel to support projects globally and readiness for flexible with working hours Knowledge of applicable electrical standards such as IEC 61850, IEC 62351, IEC 12207, IEEE 15288, IEC 25010, IEC 27032, NERC/CIP. Job Description Summary We are seeking a highly skilled Reliability Consulting Engineer with a strong background in protection and control systems, energy management devices, and utility-scale software for transmission and distribution (T&D) applications. In this role, you will lead reliability initiatives across the lifecycle of critical grid automation products, including protection relays, control devices, digital substation solutions, and advanced software platforms. You will apply best-in-class reliability engineering methodologies to ensure system resilience, regulatory compliance, and long-term field performance. Your work will directly support utility customers in achieving higher uptime, reduced lifecycle costs, and safer grid operation. Job Description Key Responsibilities Perform reliability modeling and statistical analysis of energy management and protection/control products to predict field performance and act as authority for reliability design decisions. Develop and execute reliability test plans for hardware and software, including hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), environmental, and stress testing for grid components. Conduct and lead FMEA, FMECA, and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for hardware/software failure events across embedded systems and communication layers. Work with product design, systems engineering, and software teams to ensure Design for Reliability (DfR) is embedded from concept through deployment. Analyze field data from deployed devices (e.g., relays, RTUs, control systems) to identify systemic issues and recommend corrective/preventive actions. Collaborate with utilities and customers to support grid asset performance programs and grid modernization initiatives, including IEC 61850, virtualization, and advanced diagnostics. Develop and maintain reliability KPIs (e.g., MTBF, FIT rate, availability) for product lines and integrate into product development and quality programs. Identify and drive adoption of predictive and condition-based maintenance strategies using remote diagnostics, SCADA, and sensor data. Consult and align with the Innovation Office and Applications team to ensure reliability priorities influence working group participation, standards leadership, and technology strategy. Research Topic and Significance The MITIGATE-HARM project focuses on developing advanced control and protection concepts for multi-terminal High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) power systems. As the integration of renewable energy sources and power electronics in modern grids increases, so does the complexity of ensuring their stable and reliable operation. Harmonic instabilities and resonances in hybrid power systems (HPS) present significant challenges to grid planners and operators. This project directly addresses these challenges by enabling harmonic stability assessment and proposing robust mitigation strategies. The outcomes will not only advance the planning and interoperability of HVDC grids but also contribute to the wider adoption of clean, sustainable energy technologies, making this research highly relevant to both scientific advancement and societal needs. Project Details This is a 2-3 year postdoctoral appointment, expected to begin on December 1, 2025, under the supervision of Dr. Aleksandra Lekić, Associate Professor. The successful candidate will join the Intelligent Electrical Power Grids (IEPG) section within the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, and Computer Science. The IEPG group, led by Prof. Dr. Peter Palensky, is dedicated to advancing the reliability, efficiency, and safety of future power systems through innovative research in power technologies and smart controls. The Department of Electrical Sustainable Energy offers extensive facilities, including a large ESP laboratory, high voltage and DC grids testing environments, and one of the largest academic Real-Time Digital Simulation (RTDS) infrastructures for AC and DC protection and monitoring. The MITIGATE-HARM Project Entails – Developing a mathematical framework for identifying instabilities and resonances within the HPS. – Proposing and implementing mitigation measures to ensure stable power system operation. – Incorporating these solutions into the Harmony toolbox using C++ programming (see: https://cresym.eu/harmony/). – Engaging in real-world collaborations with Transmission System Operators (TSOs) and academic partners. The MITIGATE-HARM Project, Conducted In Collaboration With Transmission System Operators (TSOs) And Academic Partners, Focuses On – Developing mathematical frameworks for identifying instabilities and resonances in hybrid power systems. – Proposing and evaluating mitigation measures to enhance wideband passivity and stability. – Implementing these solutions in C++ and integrating them into the Harmony toolbox (https://cresym.eu/harmony/). The research will involve both theoretical and practical aspects, including modeling, simulation, and software development, with the goal of enabling stable and efficient operation of advanced HVDC grids. Candidate Profile Ideal applicants for this postdoctoral position should possess the following qualifications and attributes: – A completed Ph.D. in a highly technical discipline such as electrical engineering, computer science, or a closely related field, with outstanding academic performance. – Deep knowledge of electrical power systems and power electronics, particularly in the context of power electronic devices, control, simulation, and modeling. – Demonstrated experience in modeling and simulation of power electronics-based power systems, including the identification and mitigation of resonances and instabilities. – Strong programming skills in C++ and MATLAB; familiarity with PSCAD simulation is considered an asset. – Excellent command of English in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. – Independence, self-motivation, and a strong eagerness to learn and collaborate with colleagues and external partners. – A passion for linking research to real-world challenges and contributing to the global energy transition.
