Job Description

As a Postdoctoral Research Scholar at the National Institute of Aerospace (NIA) in Hampton, Virginia, your primary focus will be investigating energy storage materials for aerospace applications. You will be responsible for exploring the synthesis, characterization, processing, and applications of novel battery materials, with a particular emphasis on high energy and high-power solid-state batteries. Your work will contribute to advancing scientific knowledge in the field with a priority on meeting the requirements for aerospace applications. Collaborating with engineers, scientists, student interns, and technicians at the Advanced Materials Processing Branch of NASA Langley Research Center, your primary responsibilities will include supporting ongoing NASA research in energy storage materials and process development. This will involve the exploration of novel energy storage materials and processes for future aerospace applications, as well as interacting with other researchers on the team. Additionally, you will be expected to prepare technical presentations and papers to document and communicate the results of your work. To excel in this role, you must hold a Ph.D. degree in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrochemistry, electrical engineering, or a related field. You should possess knowledge in energy storage materials and various advanced battery systems, along with general chemistry laboratory skills including synthesis and characterization. Strong oral and written communication skills, a strong and independent work ethic, and the ability to successfully complete a background investigation required to obtain a NASA badge are essential requirements. Desired skills for this position include experience in battery cell assembly, testing, and post-mortem analyses, knowledge/experience in solid-state electrolyte and battery systems, knowledge/experience in nanomaterials and applications, as well as experience in materials science, analytical chemistry, related characterization methods, instrumentation operation, and interpretation of experimental results.
