Position Summary: We are seeking an R&D and Chemical Operations Supervisor to oversee research and development activities, chemical processing operations, and effluent treatment process trials at our Vapi facility. This role combines hands-on laboratory supervision with comprehensive oversight of chemical operations, including ETP management, new product trials, and PVA emulsion setup and optimization. Key Responsibilities: Co-ordinate, and execute R&D trials for new chemical formulations, especially related to PVA emulsions and other products.while ensuring execution as per instructions. Follow SOPs and conduct lab-scale to pilot-scale trials for new products and process improvements. Maintain detailed technical documentation of all R&D trials, findings, and modifications. Coordinate operations and follow up on daily activities. Operate and monitor pilot-scale PVA-based emulsion polymerization processes. Prepare batches according to established SOPs and formulations. Monitor critical parameters such as temperature, dosing rate, and reaction time. Maintain accurate and detailed records of raw materials, process data, and batch production. Troubleshoot and resolve process deviations and quality issues promptly. Collaborate closely with QA/QC teams for sampling, testing, and approvals. Ensure compliance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and industrial safety standards. Maintain smooth shift handovers and clear communication of process status. Ensure proper training of staff on equipment operation and safety protocols Qualifications and Skills: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field. 2–3 years of experience in chemical processing, preferably with pilot plant operations. Solid understanding of polymer chemistry and emulsion polymerization techniques. Hands-on experience with reactors, dosing systems, and temperature control equipment. Strong attention to detail and commitment to following protocols without deviation. Excellent problem-solving and written communication skills. Ability to work independently and adapt to dynamic process changes. Working Conditions: Industrial pilot plant environment with chemical exposure. Mandatory use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Physical activity including standing for extended periods Shift work including occasional weekends, as required. The designated capacity was 63875 TPA. Post-expansion, this will now be scaled upto 133955 TPA. Consequently, it is expected to produce best quality of VSF in the group with consistency and at lowest cost of production and establish benchmarks with the group. The Unit meets the requirement of fibre in both domestic and export market. Post-expansion, a 25 MW extraction mode captive power plant having interdependency with VSF operation is integrated with zero tripping tolerance. There has been continuous improvement on all fronts viz quality, safety, production, productivity, product grades, consumption ratios, environmental aspects etc. These are to be sustained and improved further for providing a competitive edge to the business. Viscose preparation is a chemical process and it involves a sequence of operations. Few important unit operations are: Alkylation, Xanthation, Filtration, de-polymerization, de-aeration , Refrigeration & use of catalyst etc. Control of various parameters in each operation in narrow band is required to maintain standard quality of the final product. It is also required to update the old technology to improve quality product, reduce cost of production, energy conservation & maintain safe work environment etc. Major Challenges 1. Water consumption in the process is high which would pose challenge during bad monsoon 2. Carrying out rehabilitation, repair and technological innovations in running plant - sustaining production and quality without sacrificing safety and environment 3. Resistance by the Collective bargaining units about bringing technological changes Unit specific Challenges: 4. Machine 1 & 2 were developed in house, it's very old technology - which limits productivity, quality and cost optimization. 5.
