PL1/Fortron Developer

The PL/I / Fortran Mainframe Developer builds and maintains core legacy applications that run on IBM Mainframe environments for banking and wealth management clients. The role involves hands-on programming in PL/I and/or Fortran, integrating with enterprise data stores (e.g., DB2), and enhancing existing systems. You will analyze requirements, implement changes, fix defects, and optimize performance for batch and online workloads. Collaboration with business analysts, QA, and support teams is essential to deliver reliable, well-documented solutions. Exposure to broader legacy stacks (e.g., COBOL) and AIX/UNIX environments is beneficial.

Required Qualifications

• 3-10 years of total IT experience with 3+ years hands-on development in PL/I and/or Fortran on IBM Mainframe.
• Strong mainframe fundamentals (TSO/ISPF, batch concepts, job scheduling), with ability to develop, debug, and optimize legacy applications.
• Experience with DB2 or similar enterprise relational databases, including SQL and data access from mainframe programs.
• Proven experience in requirement analysis, coding, unit testing, defect fixing, and production support in enterprise environments.
• Domain exposure in financial services (banking/wealth management) delivering changes to critical systems.
• Good-to-have: COBOL programming exposure and ability to understand legacy codebases.
• Good-to-have: Experience working on AIX/UNIX environments for builds, utilities, or scripting.
• Good-to-have: Familiarity with legacy modernization or remediation initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain mainframe applications using PL/I and/or Fortran for banking/wealth use cases.
• Analyze business and technical requirements, estimate effort, and implement enhancements or fixes.
• Write efficient SQL and integrate with DB2 or equivalent data stores; ensure data integrity and performance.
• Perform unit and integration testing, participate in code reviews, and create technical documentation.
• Troubleshoot production issues, perform root-cause analysis, and implement permanent fixes.
• Optimize batch/online jobs for performance, stability, and resilience.
• Collaborate with BAs, QA, infrastructure, and support teams across the SDLC.
• Contribute to legacy modernization initiatives and refactoring where applicable.
• Follow secure coding standards, change management, and deployment processes.
• Work within service-level expectations for delivery and support in a regulated financial environment.
