We are seeking a professional indexer to create high-quality, reader-friendly indexes for scholarly manuscripts in the arts and humanities. The ideal candidate will have a strong academic background in these fields, combined with hands-on expertise in indexing tools and best practices. Key Responsibilities: Create and refine subject and name indexes for academic manuscripts. Ensure relevance and selectivity in index terms, avoiding over-indexing or inclusion of trivial mentions. Use Microsoft Word’s indexing functions to embed and manage index entries. Structure indexes logically, using cross-references, subentries, and hierarchies where appropriate. Liaise with authors to confirm terminology, spelling conventions, and scope of coverage. Deliver indexes on time, in publisher-specified formats, ensuring usability and professional quality. Required Qualifications & Skills: 3–5 years of professional indexing experience , ideally with academic or scholarly publishers. Strong background in arts and humanities subjects (degree or demonstrable subject familiarity preferred). Proficiency in Microsoft Word indexing functions (marking entries, managing cross-references, generating indexes). Proven track record of producing relevant, user-friendly indexes (not mechanical term extraction). Ability to follow detailed style guides and publishing conventions. Strong attention to detail, analytical skills, and ability to interpret complex scholarly texts. Excellent communication skills and reliability in meeting deadlines. Desired Qualifications & Skills: Familiarity with Adobe InDesign indexing workflows (embedded vs. stand-alone index creation). Knowledge of or interest in automation tools (macros, scripts, or AI-assisted approaches) to streamline indexing processes. Membership of professional associations such as the Society of Indexers (SI) or American Society for Indexing (ASI) . Experience working with multilingual manuscripts or non-English indexing conventions.
