OT Technician – Surgery

Pre-Operative Responsibilities

• Prepare operation theatre for scheduled and emergency surgeries.
• Ensure availability and functionality of surgical instruments, equipment, and consumables.
• Perform sterilization of instruments using autoclave/ETO as per protocol.
• Check OT lights, suction, anesthesia machine, cautery, monitors, and other equipment.
• Assist in patient positioning and transfer to OT maintaining safety protocols.
• Ensure adherence to infection control and OT asepsis standards.

Intra-Operative Responsibilities

• Assist surgeons and scrub nurses during surgical procedures.
• Handle surgical instruments and equipment as per requirement.
• Monitor and maintain sterile field throughout the surgery.
• Operate OT equipment like cautery, suction, endoscopy systems, etc.
• Respond promptly to intra-operative requirements and emergencies.

Post-Operative Responsibilities

• Assist in shifting patient to recovery room safely.
• Ensure proper disposal of biomedical waste as per BMW rules.
• Clean, pack, and send instruments for sterilization.
• Maintain OT cleanliness and readiness for next procedure.
• Document OT usage, instrument counts, and procedure logs.

Equipment & Inventory Management

• Maintain OT equipment, instruments, and consumables.
• Report malfunctioning equipment to concerned department.
• Assist in stock management and indenting of OT supplies.

Quality & Safety Compliance

• Follow NABH, infection control, and hospital SOPs.
• Participate in audits, drills, and quality improvement initiatives.
• Adhere to patient safety, fire safety, and emergency protocols.

Key Skills & Competencies

• Knowledge of OT procedures and surgical instruments
• Understanding of sterilization and infection control practices
• Ability to work in shifts and handle emergency surgeries
• Attention to detail and teamwork
• Basic computer knowledge for documentation

Qualifications & Experience

• Qualification: Diploma / B.Sc. in OT Technology or equivalent
• Experience: 2–5 years in OT
• Preferred: Experience in multispecialty hospital

Working Conditions

• Rotational shifts including nights, weekends, and emergencies
• High-stress environment requiring precision and alertness
