The University of Glasgow is seeking a dedicated individual to join the LISA Optical Bench Team. In this role, you will be responsible for working on the optical benches that are crucial components of the interferometry system on spacecraft. The optical benches are constructed using Zerodur, a low expansion glass, with precise alignment of optical components. Your tasks will include designing, building, testing, and documenting various subsystems such as beam collimators, imaging systems, and beam dumps that are integrated into the optical benches. A key aspect of this position involves collaborating with a diverse range of partners, including sub-system suppliers from multiple European countries, as well as organizations like the ESA, UKSA, ATC, and NASA. It is essential to adhere to funders/partners conditions, specifically related to restrictions on exporting information covered by Export Administration Regulations (EAR). As part of the Optical Bench Team, you will participate in research activities, document research output, prepare technical documentation, and represent the team at workshops and collaboration meetings. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to present research findings at national and international conferences to enhance the visibility of the research group. To be successful in this role, you should hold an Honours degree in a relevant subject or equivalent qualification. Practical laboratory skills in optics, interferometry, and photonics are essential, along with the ability to learn new techniques and communicate complex data effectively. Experience in optics/interferometry/photonics environments is required, with a track record of publications being advantageous. If appointed at Grade 7, you will be expected to demonstrate a higher level of independence, leadership, and responsibility in planning, funding, collaborating, and publishing research. Additionally, you will take a lead role in optical bench build and test activities, as well as contribute to technical documentation preparation. The University of Glasgow offers a competitive salary and a supportive work environment that values diversity, inclusion, and employee well-being. If you are passionate about optical systems and space technology and meet the qualifications for this role, we encourage you to apply.
