Oncology Specialist Coder

Skills Required for an Oncology Medical Coder:

1. Strong Knowledge of:

ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II coding systems.

Oncology terminology (e.g., tumor types, chemotherapy drugs, radiation protocols).

2. Attention to Detail:

Precision is critical to avoid billing errors or claim denials.

3. Understanding of Oncology Procedures:

Familiarity with procedures like tumor excision, port insertion, infusion therapy, etc.

4. Analytical Thinking:

Ability to interpret complex oncology notes and lab reports.

5. Certifications (Highly Recommended):

CPC (Certified Professional Coder) – by AAPC

COC (Certified Outpatient Coder)

CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) – by AHIMA

Specialty in Hematology/Oncology coding is an added advantage.

6. EMR and Billing Software Proficiency:

Experience with electronic medical records and billing systems used in oncology practices.
