Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

Patient Care & Monitoring:

  • Provide direct, round-the-clock nursing care to critically ill patients in the ICU.
  • Monitor vital signs and clinical parameters, interpret data, and identify early signs of deterioration.
  • Administer medications, intravenous infusions, and titrate vasoactive drugs as per ICU protocols.
  • Manage mechanical ventilation, tracheostomy care, suctioning, and oxygen therapy.
  • Perform critical procedures such as CVP monitoring, arterial line care, NG/OG tube insertion, and central line care.
  • Ensure strict aseptic techniques and infection control protocols are maintained at all times.

Emergency Response:

  • Respond promptly to Code Blue and other medical emergencies within the unit.
  • Assist physicians during emergency procedures like intubation, resuscitation, and invasive monitoring.
  • Provide advanced life support (ALS/BLS certified care) as needed.

Documentation & Coordination:

  • Maintain accurate and timely patient records, including assessments, nursing interventions, medication administration, and progress notes.
  • Coordinate with physicians, respiratory therapists, and other ICU staff to ensure integrated patient care.
  • Communicate effectively with patients families, providing updates and emotional support.

Training & Development:

  • Participate in orientation and training of new ICU nurses and junior staff.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest critical care practices, equipment, and guidelines.
  • Attend and contribute to ICU rounds, audits, and nursing conferences.

Quality & Safety:

  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, ICU protocols, and accreditation standards (e.g., NABH, JCI).
  • Participate in infection control audits, medication error reporting, and nursing quality improvement initiatives.
  • Monitor and maintain ICU equipment; promptly report malfunctions or safety concerns.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Educational Qualification:

  • B.Sc Nursing / GNM with ICU training (Post Basic B.Sc Nursing preferred)
  • Critical Care Nursing Certification / Diploma (preferred)
  • Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years of ICU experience in a multispecialty or tertiary care hospital.
  • Hands-on experience with ventilators, infusion pumps, and critical care protocols.
  • Licensure:

  • Registered Nurse with valid Nursing Council Registration (State/National)

Key Skills:

  • Strong clinical judgment and decision-making in emergency and high-stress environments
  • In-depth knowledge of ICU equipment and procedures
  • Effective communication and teamwork
  • Compassionate, patient-focused attitude
  • Ability to work in rotating shifts and extended hours when necessary

Desirable Attributes:

  • ACLS / BLS certification (mandatory or preferred based on hospital policy)
  • Experience in specialized ICUs (e.g., Neuro ICU, Cardiac ICU, Pediatric ICU)
  • Participation in ICU accreditation, audits, and quality improvement programs
  • Teaching or mentorship experience in clinical nursing settings
