Use specialized equipment and techniques to test visual acuity, depth perception, and the ability to focus and coordinate the eyes. Diagnosing Vision Problems and Eye Diseases Diagnose conditions such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, presbyopia, and eye diseases like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration. Use diagnostic instruments and procedures, such as retinoscopes, phoropters, and biomicroscopes. Prescribing Corrective Lenses Prescribe eyeglasses, contact lenses, and other visual aids based on the results of eye examinations. Provide fittings for contact lenses and educate patients on their use and care. Recommending and Providing Treatment Develop treatment plans for patients with visual issues or eye health problems. Prescribe medications for specific eye conditions. Provide pre- and post-operative care for patients undergoing eye surgery. Patient Education Educate patients about eye health, preventive care, and the use of corrective lenses. Offer advice on how to prevent or manage eye conditions through lifestyle changes and proper eye care practices. Collaborating with Other Healthcare Professionals Work closely with ophthalmologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care. Refer patients to ophthalmologists or other specialists when advanced care is needed. Maintaining Patient Records Keep detailed and accurate patient records, including examination results, diagnoses, and treatment plans. Ensure confidentiality and compliance with healthcare regulations and standards. Staying Current with Developments in Eye Care Keep up-to-date with the latest advancements in optometry and eye care. Participate in continuing education opportunities and professional development activities.
