Medical Transcriptionist.

Job Summary:

The Medical Transcriptionist is responsible for listening to and transcribing voice recordings made by healthcare professionals into written reports, correspondence, and other medical documents. The role requires a strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, procedures, and treatment assessments. The transcriptionist ensures accuracy and timely delivery of medical documentation, which is vital for patient care and hospital record-keeping.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Listen to and transcribe dictations from physicians and other healthcare providers.
  • Edit and correct grammar, spelling, and medical terminology in transcripts.
  • Review and verify patient information and ensure compliance with hospital standards and confidentiality laws (e.g., HIPAA).
  • Identify and flag inconsistencies, errors, or missing information in dictations.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records in the hospitals electronic health record (EHR) system.
  • Work collaboratively with medical staff to clarify dictations when necessary.
  • Meet productivity and turnaround time requirements.
  • Stay updated with medical terminology, procedures, and technologies.
  • Adhere to departmental policies, hospital regulations, and quality assurance standards.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of a certified Medical Transcription program preferred.

Experience:

  • Previous experience in a medical transcription role, preferably in a hospital setting.
  • Familiarity with Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner).

Skills:

  • Excellent listening and typing skills (typically 60+ WPM).
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and pharmacology.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proficiency in English grammar and punctuation.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks under deadlines.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA and patient confidentiality standards.

Working Conditions:

  • Office environment within a hospital or remote work, depending on hospital policy.
  • Extended periods of sitting and typing.
  • May involve shift work, weekends, or holidays depending on hospital needs.

Preferred Certifications (Optional but Advantageous):

  • Registered Healthcare Documentation Specialist (RHDS)
  • Certified Healthcare Documentation Specialist (CHDS)
