Job Summary

The Lead Mechanical Design Engineer for Piping and Static Equipment in the oil and gas sector is a senior role responsible for the overall management of mechanical design activities on complex projects. This role includes guiding a team of engineers, developing project specifications, ensuring compliance with international codes and standards, and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams from the conceptual design phase through commissioning.

Responsibilities

Leadership and project management

  • Lead, mentor, and supervise a team of mechanical engineers and designers to ensure project goals are met on time and within budget.

  • Develop and implement project execution plans, coordination procedures, and quality plans.

  • Act as the primary technical contact for clients, fostering strong customer relationships.

  • Ensure a formal and disciplined technical communication protocol is maintained throughout the project lifecycle.

Technical design and analysis

  • For static equipment: Oversee the technical requirements, specification, and design for equipment such as pressure vessels, heat exchangers, columns, reactors, and storage tanks.

  • For piping: Supervise the design and layout of piping systems, including routing, material selection, and support placement.

  • Conduct and review advanced static and dynamic pipe stress analyses using software like CAESAR II.

  • Perform or oversee technical calculations for equipment design and evaluation.

Documentation and quality assurance

  • Review, approve, and manage project deliverables, including piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), mechanical data sheets, and equipment specifications.

  • Prepare and review technical bid evaluations for vendor packages.

  • Verify that designs conform to project specifications and international industry codes and standards, such as ASME, API, and TEMA.

  • Ensure all project documentation is properly archived.

Coordination and support

  • Coordinate and interface with other engineering disciplines (e.g., process, civil, electrical, and instrumentation) to ensure seamless project integration.

  • Participate in design reviews, including 3D model reviews (30%, 60%, 90%), HAZOP, and other risk assessments.

  • Provide technical support for procurement, fabrication, construction, commissioning phases and Turnaround activities .

  • Stringent deadlines: Managing tight and demanding project timelines is crucial for staying on budget.

  • Navigating regulations: Adhering to complex and evolving international and regional codes and standards (like ASME, API, and regulatory board guidelines) is a constant challenge.

  • Integration with other disciplines: Effectively coordinating with process, instrumentation, electrical, and civil teams to prevent interface clashes requires strong communication.

  • Risk management: Balancing safety, cost, and efficiency in design, especially for high-pressure and high-temperature systems.

  • Technological evolution: Staying current with new software tools and emerging technologies like automation, advanced analytics, and AI to optimize design.

We are known for our extraordinary people who make the impossible possible every day. Questians are driven by hunger, humility, and aspiration. We believe that our company culture is the key to our ability to make a true difference in every industry we reach. We wholeheartedly believe in the diversity of thought that comes with fostering a culture rooted in respect, where everyone belongs, is valued, and feels inspired to share their ideas. We know embracing our unique differences makes us better, and that solving the worlds hardest engineering problems requires diverse ideas, perspectives, and backgrounds. We shine the brightest when we tap into the many dimensions that thrive across over 21,000 difference-makers in our workplace.

Work Experience

Qualifications

Education and experience

  • A bachelor's or master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field from a recognized university.
  • 12+ years of experience in mechanical design and engineering within the oil and gas, refining, or petrochemical industries.
  • Demonstrated experience as a Lead on at least three projects.

Technical skills

  • Proficiency with industry-standard software, including:
    • 3D modeling/CAD: PDS, PDMS, Navisworks.
    • Stress analysis: CAESAR II.
    • Static equipment design: PV Elite, Compress, HTRI.
  • Extensive knowledge of international design codes and standards, such as ASME, API, TEMA, and NACE.
  • Experience in both onshore and offshore (FPSO) and brownfield projects is highly desirable.

Desirable skills and competencies

Beyond the standard technical skills, certain competencies are highly valued.

  • Deep technical knowledge: Expertise in pipe stress analysis, material selection, and equipment sizing. Knowledge of specialized areas like fitness-for-service assessments and failure analysis is a plus.

  • Vendor and client management: Experience in preparing RFQ documents, evaluating vendor bids, and managing communication with external suppliers and clients.

  • Project planning: Competence in project management tools and methodologies to plan, execute, and monitor project activities, schedules, and budgets.

  • Problem-solving: The ability to resolve complex engineering issues, troubleshoot equipment malfunctions, and provide solutions during construction and operation.

  • Safety leadership: A strong commitment to health, safety, and environment (HSE) standards and the ability to embed safety into all design practices.
