Job Description

Junior Scientist – Membrane Science & Enzyme Immobilization

We are seeking a full-time Junior Scientist with a strong background in membrane science, enzyme immobilization, and biomaterial interfaces to join an interdisciplinary product development team. This role is ideal for someone passionate about innovating in medical diagnostics through smart material design and biosensor integration.

The selected candidate will work closely with experts in electrochemistry, microfabrication, and biochemistry to develop novel sensing platforms. Experience in industrial translational research or product-oriented academic projects is highly preferred.

This position demands a proactive, collaborative, and adaptable individual who can manage tasks independently while contributing to the larger goals of the team. A strong commitment to quality, timelines, and innovation is essential.

Key Responsibilities:

This is a laboratory-based role focused on the design, modification, and characterization of membranes for biosensing and immobilization strategies for diagnostic sensor platforms. Key duties include:

  • Designing and fabricating membranes and interfaces for enzyme immobilization in biosensor applications.
  • Selecting and optimizing enzyme immobilization strategies (e.g., covalent bonding, adsorption, entrapment) to maximize stability and performance.
  • Collaborating with materials and electrochemistry teams to integrate membranes into device platforms.
  • Conducting and analysing experiments for characterizing membranes (e.g., porosity, hydrophilicity, thickness) and immobilized enzymes (e.g., activity, stability).
  • Maintaining accurate and complete records of all procedures, data, and outcomes.
  • Contributing to sensor validation studies in lab and field settings.
  • Preparing technical reports, research documentation, and assisting in patent or publication writing.
  • Ensuring proper maintenance, calibration, and safety of laboratory equipment.
  • Participating in interdepartmental meetings and collaborations.
  • Supporting the management of subcontractors or vendors related to membrane or enzyme sourcing.
  • Traveling when necessary for field trials, supplier visits, or collaborator meetings.

Qualifications

  • M.Sc./M.Tech. with 3+ years of experience or Ph.D. in Membrane Science, Biomaterials, Enzyme Immobilization, Biotechnology, Polymer Science, or closely related fields.

Knowledge / Experience

Essential:

  • Strong experience in membrane design and fabrication for biosensors or biomedical devices.
  • Practical knowledge of enzyme immobilization techniques and evaluation of enzyme performance post-immobilization.
  • Exposure to characterization techniques for membranes and biomolecular layers.
  • Experience working in academic or industrial research focused on translational or applied outcomes.

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with materials science, including polymers, hydrogels, and surface modification methods.
  • Understanding of electrochemical sensing principles and how membranes/enzymes impact sensor signals.
  • Experience with analytical techniques like SEM, FTIR, contact angle, UV-vis, or electrochemical methods (CV, EIS, chronoamperometry).
  • Prior use of Design of Experiments (DoE) for optimization.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to independently review scientific literature and formulate new concepts or strategies.
  • Strong experimental planning, data interpretation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Clear and concise technical writing skills for documentation, publications, or patents.
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills for team collaboration and reporting.
  • Proficiency in lab data handling tools and scientific software.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.

Personal Attributes

  • Collaborative and proactive team player with a can-do attitude.
  • Willingness to take initiative and ownership of responsibilities.
  • High integrity regarding confidentiality and data security.
  • Flexible and adaptive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to travel for project needs (field trials, supplier visits, etc.).
  • Open to continuous learning and professional development.

Salary & Benefits

The compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
