Job Description

Role & responsibilities

Diagnosis
: Gastroenterologists identify digestive disorders through patient consultations, physical exams, medical history reviews, and diagnostic tests like endoscopies, colonoscopies, and imaging studies.
Treatment
: They treat a wide range of conditions, from common issues like GERD and IBS to complex diseases like Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, liver diseases, and pancreatic disorders. They also manage acute GI problems and post-liver transplant care.
Procedures
: They perform both diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to visualize the digestive tract and intervene as needed. These can include:

Upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy
Colonoscopy
Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
Liver biopsies
Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)
Paracentesis (fluid removal)

Prevention
: They play a vital role in preventive care by performing colorectal cancer screenings and counseling patients on lifestyle, diet, and risk-reduction strategies to maintain long-term digestive health.
Ongoing management
: They monitor chronic diseases, adjust treatment plans, and provide ongoing care to improve the quality of life for patients with conditions like hepatitis or inflammatory bowel disease.
Collaboration
: They collaborate with other specialists, such as primary care physicians, surgeons, oncologists, and nutritionists, to create comprehensive treatment plans for patients with complex conditions.
