Job Description

An Interventional Radiology (IVR) medical coder reviews and translates diagnostic and procedural statements from interventional radiology medical records into industry-standard codes for billing and data collection. This specialization requires knowledge of vascular and non-vascular procedures performed using image-guided technology.  Key responsibilities

  • Review medical records:

     Analyze physician notes, procedure reports, and other clinical documentation to determine the services provided.

  • Assign codes accurately:

     Translate procedures and diagnoses into the correct CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS codes. This includes both professional fee and facility coding.

  • Ensure coding compliance:

     Apply expert knowledge of official coding guidelines from organizations like AAPC and AHIMA, as well as federal (CMS), state, and payer-specific regulations.

  • Resolve documentation issues:

     Query physicians and other providers when documentation is ambiguous, incomplete, or conflicting to ensure coding accuracy.

  • Support the revenue cycle:

     Work with billing and revenue cycle teams to resolve claim denials related to coding errors and ensure accurate and timely reimbursement.

  • Perform quality assurance:

     Participate in internal and external audits to maintain high coding accuracy and compliance standards.

  • Stay current on coding guidelines:

     Keep up-to-date with changes in coding guidelines, regulations, and payer policies through continuing education.

  • Adhere to productivity standards:

     Meet organizational benchmarks for both the quantity and quality of coded records.
