Job Description

Role & responsibilities

  • To conduct Infection control rounds daily and maintains the registers.
  • To be involved in education of HCWs
  • To maintain registers and data of Sharps/Needle stick injuries and Post exposure prophylaxis
  • To initiate and ensure proper immunization for all staffs as per the risk stratification of their working environment.
  • To initiate and ensure proper immunization for Hepatitis B Virus imunoglobulin and HBsAg vaccine, in consultation with microbiologist (Member HICC) in case of suspected exposure to any hospital worker
  • To ensure that all positive culture cases are been tracked and for each positive culture from inpatient unit a hospital infection information sheet or surgical site infection Sheet is filled and to keep a record for each positive culture case. All probable cases of HAIs and anomalous/irrational use of antibiotics must be discussed in HICC meetings.
  • To track the indicators of infection control and present the data to the HICC meetings on regular basis.
  • To conduct special tasks given to him/her regarding hospital infection control.
  • To ensure adherence to and implementation of infection control protocol for the hospital.
  • To supervise, educate and ensure disposal of bio-medical waste by doctors, nurses and paramedical staff for proper disposal at source and to the housekeeping staff for collection and transportation as per the hospital policy.
  • To supervise, educate and ensure disposal, storage and transport of bio-medical waste inside and out side hospital.
  • Periodic visit with HICC members to out source biomedical waste management vendors location and the record of the visits to be stored.
  • Periodic visit with HICC members to OT, CSSD,Endoscopy, Cath-Lab,Dialysis,ER,Laundry and Critical Care Areas to understand the cleaning and disinfection process.
  • To supervise, educate and ensure the cleaning of biomedical Equipments, surface clean, procurement, preparation, transportation, storage all over the hospital with the help of respective area supervisors
  • To do a survey and track Hospital acquired infection (hospital acquired, hospital associated and healthcare related)
  • To collect data pertaining to urinary tract infection, ventilator associated pneumonia, Catheter related blood stream infection, Surgical site infection
  • To monitor Environmental Sterility within the hospital, during various projects/renovation/maintenance work in wards, OT etc. Inspecting all areas for infection control
  • To monitor the isolation precautions as to who requires and revisit the patients (EG: TB patients) to ensure isolation process is followed
  • To follow up health care workers for accidental blood & body fluid exposure and check their health status according to the policy
  • To provide pre and post-exposure prophylaxis and maintain the records.
  • To monitor the water quality across the hospital - drinking as well as water in the facility (washrooms, OT, wards) at source
  • To monitor the RO water quality across the hospital
  • In case of an outbreak of a hospital acquired infection, to co-ordinates the investigation of outbreaks of infection
  • To possess the ability to risk manage infection control issues during outbreaks, sterilisation failures, damages to infrastructure or exposure to infectious diseases
  • To extend support in setting infection control processes & procedures at new projects
  • To promote evidenced based Infection Control practices to health care workers, patients and their families.
  • To provide education to departments or individuals on infection control practices.
  • To create and maintain links with all departments to facilitate effective and safe infection control practices.
  • To ensure maintenance of skills base and professional practice by attending relevant lectures, conferences and workshops and by regularly reviewing infection control and related published research.
  • To ensure infection control standards meet professional, organisational, legal and ethical requirements.
  • To participate in surveillance activities and hand hygiene audits to ensure data is submitted within required time frames.
  • To provide feedback data to key stakeholders to demonstrate infection control program successes or improvement opportunities.
  • To promote and maintain records of staff immunisation against vaccine preventable diseases.
  • To actively participate in the organisation’s multidisciplinary and nursing committees to promote Infection Control best practice and to share information.
  • To review infection control guidelines and policies as required and communicate the changes.
  • To provide reports to the Infection Control and associated Committees monthly or as required.
  • To manage occupational exposure to blood and body fluids and other infectious diseases.
  • Conduct Infection control audit and analyse the data for understanding the areas of improvement across the hospital.
  • The finding of the audit to be presented in HICC.
  • Ensure nursing documents are done properly on regular basis
  • To conduct clinical audit regular basis.
  • To able to work flex hours based on the situation ,including an occasional evening and weekend.
