Department/Unit: Smelter Operations Reporting To : Smelter Shift In-charge Direct Reports: None Job Purpose/Summary: To operate and monitor the smelting furnace (e.g., flash furnace, electric furnace) and associated equipment, ensuring stable and efficient operation for the production of matte or blister copper, while adhering to safety protocols and process parameters Key Responsibilities & Duties: Operation: Operate furnace controls (e.g., burners, feeders, air/oxygen supply) from the control room or locally to maintain optimal operating conditions (temperature, pressure, gas flow). Monitoring: Continuously monitor furnace parameters, material levels, gas analysis, and equipment status. Material Handling: Control and monitor the charging of concentrates, fluxes, and other raw materials into the furnace. Tapping: Safely manage tapping of matte, slag, or blister copper according to schedule and established procedures. Troubleshooting: Identify and report operational issues, minor equipment malfunctions, or process deviations. Perform basic adjustments or report for higher-level intervention. Safety: Adhere strictly to all safety procedures, including those related to high temperatures, molten metal, gas hazards, and confined spaces. Use appropriate PPE. Housekeeping: Maintain a clean and organized work area around the furnace. Data Recording: Accurately record operational data, readings, and observations in logbooks or digital systems Key Performance Indicators (KPIs): Adherence to Furnace Process Parameters Matte/Blister Copper Production Rate (Shift-wise) Energy Consumption per Ton of Charge Safety Incidents (Furnace Area) Timely Tapping Operations Required Qualifications: ITI in Process Operation, Fitter, or Mechanical, or equivalent vocational training. Required Experience: 3-6 years of experience in furnace operations within a heavy process industry, preferably metals/smelting. Required Skills: Basic understanding of pyrometallurgical principles. Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, flowsheets, and control panel displays. Familiarity with DCS/SCADA systems. High safety awareness and adherence to procedures.
