The Consultant Gastroenterologist will be responsible for diagnosing, treating, and managing patients with gastrointestinal (GI) diseases. This role involves clinical evaluation, diagnostic procedures, therapeutic interventions, and patient care in both outpatient and inpatient settings. The Consultant will also collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, guide junior residents, and contribute to academic and research activities. Key Responsibilities: Diagnose and manage a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions such as: Acid reflux (GERD) Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) Hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, and other liver diseases Pancreatitis Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) Gastrointestinal cancers GI bleeding, liver diseases, and malabsorption disorders Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including: Endoscopy (upper and lower) Colonoscopy ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) Liver biopsy Capsule endoscopy Collaborate with surgical teams for GI-related surgeries and interventions. Provide inpatient care, including consultations, management of GI emergencies, and daily rounds. Interpret diagnostic tests like blood work, imaging studies, endoscopy results, and biopsy reports. Develop and implement personalized treatment plans for patients with chronic GI conditions. Educate patients about lifestyle modifications, dietary management, and the prevention of GI diseases. Guide and mentor junior doctors, residents, and medical students. Participate in clinical research, case presentations, and academic activities within the department. Maintain thorough and accurate medical documentation for all patients. Participate in quality control, audits, and continuous improvement initiatives in clinical practice. Key Skills and Competencies: Clinical & Procedural Skills: Expertise in the diagnosis and management of a wide range of GI disorders, including liver and pancreatic diseases. Proficiency in performing and interpreting endoscopic procedures (gastroscopy, colonoscopy, ERCP, etc.). Ability to manage GI emergencies such as GI bleeding, acute pancreatitis, and severe IBD exacerbations. Strong knowledge in interpreting lab results, imaging studies (ultrasound, CT, MRI), and biopsy findings. Familiarity with advanced therapeutic interventions like stenting, variceal banding, and other endoscopic procedures. Soft Skills: Excellent communication skills to discuss complex diagnoses and treatment plans with patients and their families. Empathy and compassion for patients dealing with chronic gastrointestinal disorders. Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary healthcare teams. Ability to work well under pressure, particularly in emergency or high-stress situations.
