Job Description: Data Center Electrical Design Expert (6+ Years of Experience in Hyperscale Data Center Design) Position: Data Center Electrical Design Expert Location: Chennai Department: Engineering / Data Center Design Reports to: Head of Engineering Employment Type: Full-Time Overview: We are seeking a highly experienced Data Center Electrical Design Expert to join our dynamic team, specializing in the electrical design of hyperscale data centers. The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience (6+ years) in the design and development of large-scale electrical systems in high-demand, high-reliability environments. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure the successful delivery of innovative, energy-efficient, and scalable electrical designs for cutting-edge hyperscale data centers. Key Responsibilities: Electrical Design Lead the electrical design and engineering efforts for hyperscale data centers, including low voltage (LV) and high voltage (HV) systems, electrical distribution, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, generators, batteries, PDUs and electrical infrastructure. Develop electrical system designs, specifications, and layouts for all electrical components, ensuring full compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and codes. Understand the project requirement and preparing Basis of Design (BOD) Design power distribution systems, backup power systems, and electrical layouts that are scalable, resilient, and optimized for high-efficiency performance in hyperscale data center environments. Calculation and design of Equipment sizing, short circuit calculation, earthing calculation, HT & LT breaker sizing calculation, etc. Preparation of cable schedule for HT and LT cables. Coordinating with vendors for product selection and integration of equipment in overall Master design Preparation of Load calculation, Power consumption (PUE), Technical specifications, schematics for Tendering Preparation of Detailed Design drawings for Tendering purpose Design of electrical SLD with protection schemes, calculation for illumination, earthing layouts. Preparation of BOQ, Make List and coordinating with Cost Estimation team on cost and work schedule Provide value Engineering inputs towards optimization, reliability, efficient design best practices Use of Dialux or equivalent for lightning calculation. Use of ETAP or equivalent for electrical power system Participation in pre-bid meetings and provide resolution to bidder queries Co-ordinate with Project Management Team & vendors for QA / QC requirements Periodic site visits, Factory visits for Acceptance test, witnessing Testing and Commissioning Validating the Test scripts for IST and witnessing the same Quantity certification and validation of all test reports Collaboration and Coordination Collaborate with architects, structural engineers, mechanical engineers, and other stakeholders to integrate electrical systems into the overall building design. Coordinate with internal teams and external vendors to select and procure electrical equipment and materials that meet the project specifications. Ensure that designs align with company sustainability goals, including energy efficiency, renewable energy integration, and reduction of environmental impact. Project Management and Oversight: Lead technical reviews, risk assessments, and troubleshooting efforts throughout the project life cycle. Provide leadership and technical guidance to junior engineers and designers, ensuring high-quality standards are maintained in all work products. Support the project management team with cost estimation, resource planning, and timeline management for electrical design and implementation. Design Validation and Optimization: Conduct detailed electrical load analysis and power system modelling to optimize capacity, efficiency, and redundancy. Review and validate electrical systems designs to ensure they meet operational performance requirements, such as availability, energy efficiency, and scalability. Lead testing and commissioning of electrical systems during data center construction and ensure systems are operating as designed. Regulatory Compliance and Documentation: Ensure compliance with all local, national, and international electrical codes, standards, and regulations (e.g., NBC, IEC, NEC, IEEE, NFPA, IEC). Prepare and maintain detailed design documentation, including drawings, specifications, and reports, for internal review, regulatory approvals, and contractor coordination. Stay current on emerging electrical technologies, best practices, and industry trends to continuously improve the design process. Risk Management: Identify potential risks in electrical system designs and provide mitigation strategies. Troubleshoot and resolve electrical system issues during design, construction, and operational phases. Qualifications: Education: Bachelors or masters degree in electrical engineering, Power Systems, or a related field. Experience: Minimum of 6 years of experience in electrical design for large-scale hyperscale data centers or mission-critical facilities. Proven track record of managing complex electrical systems design, implementation, and commissioning for hyperscale data centers. Extensive experience with electrical load analysis, power distribution, UPS systems, standby generators, and backup power solutions. Expertise in industry codes, standards, and regulations (NBC, IEC, NEC, NFPA, IEEE, etc.). Skills and Competencies: Proficient in electrical design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, SKM Power Tools, ETAP, etc.). Strong knowledge of power system protection, grounding, and lightning protection systems. Familiarity with energy-efficient design principles, including green building practices and renewable energy solutions. Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically in high-pressure situations. Capable of Understanding the Level of Design (LOD) and work accordingly. Strong communication and collaboration skills to interact with internal teams, clients, and external stakeholders. Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Preferred Qualifications: Experience with mission-critical electrical infrastructure for high-density computing environments. Certifications in electrical design or energy management.
