Dialysis Technician

Job Summary

The Hemodialysis Technician is responsible for the safe preparation, operation, and maintenance of dialysis equipment and procedures for patients with renal impairment. The role includes direct patient care, machine disinfection, reprocessing, and RO (Reverse Osmosis) water treatment management, ensuring a clean and safe environment that supports effective dialysis treatment.

Key Responsibilities

Machine Preparation

• Prepare HD machine for dialysis by rinsing, attaching dialyzer and tubing, and performing prime procedures.
• Mix and test dialysate solution according to specified formula and connect to the machine.

Vital Assessment & Starting Procedure

• Transport and position patients at the HD machine.
• Record vital signs (weight, BP, pulse, temperature) and explain procedure to ease patient anxiety.
• Clean access site using antiseptic solution and connect patient to extracorporeal circuit.

Monitoring & Documentation

• Inspect equipment settings for conductivity, pressures, and temperature.
• Initiate blood pump at prescribed Qb (blood flow) rate.
• Monitor and record venous/arterial pressure, fluid removal, and patient condition during dialysis.
• Detect and respond to adverse patient reactions or machine malfunctions.

Termination Process

• Return blood to patient as per protocol, dislodge needles, and manage bleeding.
• Record post-dialysis vitals and patient weight.

Machine Disinfection

• Rinse and chemically disinfect HD machines post-treatment.
• Replace disinfectant chemicals and clean machines externally.

Dialyzer & Bloodline Reprocessing

• Reprocess dialyzers and bloodlines manually or using auto-reuse methods.
• Log and store reprocessed items, document failures with reasons.
• Sanitize reuse machines and maintain hygiene protocols.

RO Plant & Water Treatment Management

• Perform backwash, salt regeneration, and rinse of RO system.
• Monitor and record pressures and flow rates across RO and pre-filters.
• Conduct monthly pipeline and membrane disinfection.
• Send samples for microbiological and chemical analysis and report findings to clinical head.
