Capability Manager Frontend Technologies
This is a team leadership role with a strong hands-on technical core. You will lead a large, distributed group of frontend instructors spread across campuses — assessing their technical depth, running capability evaluations, closing skill gaps through targeted training, and keeping the instructor bench healthy enough to absorb absences and scale-ups without disrupting a single class.
You'll need to be genuinely strong in frontend engineering — you cannot evaluate what you cannot do yourself — and equally comfortable running structured operations, tracking data, and having direct conversations about performance.
Key Responsibilities
1. Instructor Capability Evaluation & Certification
- Design and run technical capability evaluations for frontend instructors covering HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, and applied project work.
- Conduct mock teaching sessions and assess pedagogy alongside technical accuracy — concept clarity, board/screen work, error handling, and student Q&A response quality.
- Certify instructors as deployment-ready for specific frontend subjects, and maintain the certification record for each instructor on your track.
- Re-evaluate instructors periodically as curriculum and stack evolve, so certification never goes stale.
2. Bench Health & Backup Allocation
- Own the frontend instructor queue: when a campus raises a backup request for an absent instructor, take ownership and allocate a certified replacement within the agreed turnaround time.
- Maintain a live, accurate roster of certified frontend instructors, their campus mapping, subject coverage, and availability.
- Forecast bench requirements against upcoming campus schedules and flag coverage risks before they become class cancellations.
3. Team Management
- Lead and manage a large distributed team of frontend instructors across multiple campuses, holding each accountable to the defined delivery standard.
- Run regular 1-on-1s and team reviews; set individual goals, track progress, and drive consistency of delivery across the group.
- Handle escalations, conflicts, and day-to-day people issues within the instructor group, and act as their primary point of contact with the central academic team.
- Build engagement and retention on the track — onboard new instructors well, keep strong performers motivated, and reduce attrition.
4. Training & Gap Closure
- Identify capability gaps from evaluation data and student feedback, and design targeted upskilling interventions to close them.
- Run onboarding and refresher training for frontend instructors on our internal learning portal.
- Own Performance Improvement Plans for instructors falling below the quality bar — set clear criteria, run structured check-ins, and drive the outcome either way.
5. Quality Monitoring
- Review post-class student feedback and assessment outcomes for frontend sessions; investigate consistently low-scoring instructors or subjects.
- Sit in on live and recorded classes to audit delivery quality against the defined bar.
- Report track-level capability and quality metrics to academic leadership on a regular cadence.
6. Content & Curriculum Support
- Partner with the curriculum team to keep frontend content current with industry practice, and translate curriculum changes into instructor readiness plans.
- Build evaluation rubrics, question banks, and reference delivery material for the frontend track.
7. Cross-Functional Coordination
- Work with campus POCs, hiring, and program teams to keep instructor supply aligned with campus demand.
- Support the hiring team on technical screening for frontend instructor roles.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Technical
- 2–4 years of hands-on experience in frontend development, teaching, or a blended role.
- Strong command of HTML5, CSS3, and modern JavaScript (ES6+).
- Working proficiency in React — components, state management, hooks, routing.
- Comfortable with responsive design, Git/GitHub, REST API integration, and browser dev tools.
- Able to independently build and review production-quality frontend projects.
Functional
Proven team management experience
— has directly led a sizeable team, owned their performance, run 1-on-1s and reviews, and handled hiring, escalations, and exits. This is non-negotiable for the role.- Demonstrated ability to evaluate technical skill in others — through interviewing, mentoring, code review, or training.
- Structured and data-comfortable: can maintain rosters, track metrics, and work in spreadsheets and internal tools without hand-holding.
- Strong written and verbal communication in English; able to give direct, specific, actionable feedback.
- High ownership and follow-through — this role is measured on whether classes run, not on effort spent.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
Good to Have
- Prior experience in an ed-tech, training, or academic-quality function.
- Experience teaching or mentoring in a classroom or bootcamp setting.
- Exposure to TypeScript, Next.js, Tailwind CSS, or testing frameworks.
- Familiarity with LMS platforms and instructor performance tracking systems.
