Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Perform breast surgeries, including but not limited to lumpectomy, mastectomy (simple, skin-sparing, and nipple-sparing), sentinel lymph node biopsy, axillary dissection, and reconstructive breast surgery.
  • Conduct preoperative assessments, including clinical examinations, imaging interpretation (e.g., mammograms, ultrasound, MRI), and biopsy results.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans in consultation with the multidisciplinary oncology team.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary tumor board meetings to discuss complex cases and determine treatment protocols.
  • Provide postoperative care and management, including follow-up visits, monitoring for complications, and addressing any patient concerns.
  • Work closely with medical oncologists for adjuvant therapy decisions (chemotherapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapy).
  • Offer counseling to patients regarding surgical options, potential outcomes, and post-surgery quality of life.
  • Maintain accurate, comprehensive, and up-to-date patient records, adhering to institutional and regulatory standards.
  • Ensure proper management of complications and provide timely interventions in the event of surgical issues or recurrence.

Research & Academic Responsibilities:

  • Participate in clinical research, contributing to the advancement of breast cancer surgery and management.
  • Present research findings at national and international oncology conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Engage in continuing medical education (CME) to stay current with advancements in breast oncology and surgery.
  • Mentor and supervise junior surgeons, residents, and medical students, contributing to their professional development.

Patient Care & Counseling:

  • Provide emotional support to patients and their families, offering guidance on treatment decisions, post-surgery care, and quality of life.
  • Actively participate in patient education programs related to breast cancer awareness, prevention, early detection, and treatment options.
  • Provide counseling on genetic testing and risk assessment for patients with a family history of breast cancer or inherited genetic mutations (e.g., BRCA1/2).

Collaborative Responsibilities:

  • Work with a multidisciplinary team, including medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, and radiologists, to provide comprehensive care for breast cancer patients.
  • Collaborate with reconstructive surgeons for breast reconstruction options and post-surgical cosmetic outcomes.
  • Ensure effective communication and coordination between the surgical team, nursing staff, and other hospital departments.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Educational Qualification:

  • MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) or equivalent.
  • MS/DNB in General Surgery.
  • Fellowship or specialized training in Breast Surgical Oncology (or equivalent).
  • Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of clinical experience in breast cancer surgery after completing surgical oncology training.
  • Experience with advanced breast cancer surgeries, including mastectomy, breast-conserving surgery, sentinel lymph node biopsy, and reconstructive surgeries.
  • Experience in a multidisciplinary oncology setting is highly preferred.
  • Licensure:

  • Valid medical registration with the appropriate medical council.

Key Skills:

  • Strong clinical and surgical skills in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.
  • Expertise in advanced breast cancer surgeries, including minimal access techniques and reconstructive procedures.
  • In-depth knowledge of breast cancer pathology, staging, and treatment options (including neoadjuvant and adjuvant therapies).
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and their families, offering clear explanations of complex treatment options.
  • Compassionate and empathetic approach to patient care.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Proficiency in medical documentation and use of hospital information systems.

Desirable Attributes:

  • Research background with published work in breast oncology or related areas.
  • Familiarity with the latest advancements in breast cancer treatment, including immunotherapy and targeted therapy.
  • Interest or experience in teaching, mentoring, and training junior medical staff.
  • Certification in advanced surgical techniques or involvement in national or international breast cancer-related clinical trials.
