Supreme Court Observer (SCO) is one of India’s leading legal journalism websites that produces high quality reports and analyses of the Indian judiciary. We track important cases, access and share legal documents, produce daily reports of court proceedings and analyse key decisions of the Indian judiciary into a highly informative but easy read. Our aim is to enable common citizens to develop an understanding of the role of the judiciary in Indian public life, through fast-paced reporting and rigorous research.


About the role

The Assistant Editor will play a central role in shaping SCO’s editorial output. They will identify and track cases that have the potential to influence the development of law or significantly impact the public. They will commission pieces, collaborate with staff writers and contributors on pitches, and oversee reporting—from editing and copy-editing to fact-checking.

The Assistant Editor will ideate with writers to develop new stories and areas of research, while also writing and editing daily hearing reports, case summaries, and explainers on judgments. They will edit in-depth analytical pieces, judge profiles, video scripts, and other daily outputs from the team.

Working with the Social Media Editor, the Assistant Editor will also contribute to developing and implementing SCO’s communications strategy across digital platforms. The Assistant Editor will further support SCO’s outreach initiatives, including workshops, seminars, conferences, and other events.

Requirements

Our ideal candidate is someone who is passionate about the Supreme Court’s work and its role in India’s constitutional democracy, and committed to communicating this to a wide audience.

Candidates must have:

  • An undergraduate degree in Law or Journalism with a strong academic background, and 1–2 years of experience in related fields. Freshers will also be considered.
  • Excellent research and writing skills.
  • The ability to distill complex legal issues into clear, accessible, and engaging prose for the general public.

Candidates with prior experience in legal reporting, editing, or communications will be preferred.
