Academic Counselor

Job Title: Academic CounselorJob Summary:

An Academic Counselor supports students in achieving their educational goals by providing guidance on academic planning, course selection, and overall academic success. They help students understand degree requirements, overcome academic challenges, and make informed decisions about their educational and career paths.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide academic advising to students regarding course selection, program requirements, and educational planning.
• Monitor student academic progress and intervene with support resources when necessary.
• Assist students in setting academic goals and developing strategies to achieve them.
• Maintain accurate records of student interactions, academic plans, and progress reports.
• Interpret institutional policies and procedures for students.
• Collaborate with faculty, staff, and administration to support student success and retention.
• Identify students at academic risk and provide proactive advising and intervention strategies.
• Refer students to campus support services such as tutoring, counseling, career services, and financial aid as needed.
• Participate in orientation sessions, academic workshops, and advising events.
• Stay current on institutional academic programs, transfer guidelines, and educational trends.

Qualifications:

• Education: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field preferred.
• Experience: Prior experience in academic advising, student services, or counseling in a higher education setting is preferred.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work with diverse student populations.
• Knowledge of academic programs, degree requirements, and educational technology systems (e.g., Banner, PeopleSoft, or similar).
• Understanding of FERPA and ethical advising practices.
