Job Description

Fit-Out Duct Installers Fabrication, Measurement and Interpretation

  • Blueprint Analysis: Reading and accurately interpreting detailed HVAC shop drawings, reflected ceiling plans (RCPs), and MEP coordination drawings to determine duct routing, size, and layout within the confined space of a fit-out.
  • Fabrication: Measuring, cutting, shaping, and fitting various duct materials—including Galvanized Iron (GI), Pre-Insulated (PI) panels, and flexible ducts—using hand and power tools to create elbows, transitions, offsets, and straight runs.
  • Support Installation: Marking and installing supporting structures, such as trapeze hangers, threaded rods, and brackets, ensuring they are correctly positioned, level, and strong enough to safely support the entire duct system according to SMACNA standards (Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors' National Association).

2. Installation and Sealing

  • Assembling Ductwork: Assembling and securing duct sections and fittings, often working in tight ceiling plenums and elevated areas.
  • Airtight Sealing: Crucially, sealing all duct joints and seams meticulously with approved sealants (e.g., mastic or specialized tape) to prevent air leakage, which is vital for system efficiency and code compliance.
  • Insulation: Installing the specified thermal and acoustic insulation and vapor barriers around the ductwork to prevent energy loss and condensation, coordinating with other trades to prevent damage to the insulation.
  • Accessory Installation: Installing necessary duct accessories, including Volume Control Dampers (VCDs) for air balancing, Fire Dampers (FDs) for safety, and access doors for future maintenance and inspection.

3. Coordination and Finishing

  • Trade Coordination: Working actively with other site trades (Electricians, Plumbers, and Fire Suppression teams) to resolve clashes and ensure duct runs do not obstruct other essential systems or structural elements.
  • Terminal Installation: Installing grilles, registers, diffusers, and linear slots onto the ductwork, ensuring they are perfectly aligned with the architectural ceiling and wall finishes for aesthetic completeness.
  • Air Balance Preparation: Ensuring all installed VCDs and access points are ready for the HVAC Technician to conduct the final Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing (TAB) procedures to achieve the correct airflow rates (CFM).
  • Quality and Safety: Adhering to all site-specific safety protocols, local building codes, and HVAC installation standards to guarantee a safe, durable, and highly efficient air distribution system.
