The Field Assistant is responsible for overseeing and assisting in day-to-day field operations in the tea estate. This includes supervision of plucking, cultivation activities, labour management, and ensuring field discipline and productivity. You will monitor and guide workers during plucking, pruning, weeding, and manuring activities while ensuring adherence to estate schedules and agricultural practices. Maintaining daily attendance and work allocation of assigned labour, reporting absenteeism, indiscipline, or any field issues to superiors, and motivating workers to achieve daily targets are also part of your key responsibilities. In terms of quality control, you will be responsible for ensuring the quality of leaf plucked is in line with estate standards. You will need to reject or guide against coarse/underdeveloped leaf plucking. Additionally, maintaining field diaries, work registers, and plucking records accurately, as well as reporting daily field activity updates to the Assistant Manager, are essential tasks. Field hygiene and safety measures are crucial, and you will need to ensure proper field sanitation, upkeep of tools, and compliance with personal protective equipment (PPE) guidelines. Timely alerts on pest/disease incidence or any unsafe conditions must be raised promptly. Support functions may include assisting in fertiliser application, chemical spraying, and upkeep of irrigation systems, if any, as well as supporting bush census, field audits, and yield estimations when required. The ideal candidate should have a minimum qualification of graduation, preferably in a science background, and a basic understanding of tea field operations. Prior experience in the plantation or agriculture sector is preferred. Effective management and interaction with labour, physical fitness, and willingness to work in outdoor/field conditions, as well as basic knowledge of record-keeping and reporting, are also required skills.
