Staff Nurse - Operation theater

Role & responsibilities

The OT Scrub Nurse is responsible for maintaining strict asepsis, assisting surgeons during OBG and laparoscopic procedures, ensuring instrument readiness, and supporting safe surgical outcomes in compliance with hospital policies and NABH standards.

Preferred candidate profile

Pre-Operative Responsibilities

• Prepare OT for

  OBG and laparoscopic surgeries

  (LSCS, hysterectomy, laparoscopy).
• Ensure availability and sterility of

  instruments, trays, and consumables

  .
• Perform surgical hand scrub, gowning, and gloving as per protocol.
  
• Verify patient identity, consent, surgical site, and procedure during

  .
• Assist in patient positioning and draping maintaining dignity and safety.
  

Intra-Operative Responsibilities

• Assist surgeons during

  OBG and laparoscopic procedures

  .
• Anticipate surgeon requirements and pass instruments accurately.
  
• Maintain strict

  aseptic technique

  throughout the procedure.
• Handle laparoscopic instruments, camera systems, insufflators, and energy devices.
  
• Perform sponge, needle, and instrument counts with circulating nurse.
  
• Monitor sterile field and report breaks in asepsis immediately.
  

Post-Operative Responsibilities

• Assist in wound dressing and transfer of patient to recovery.
  
• Participate in

  Sign Out

  of Surgical Safety Checklist.
• Ensure proper handling, cleaning, and dispatch of used instruments for CSSD.
  
• Document intra-operative nursing records accurately.
  

Equipment & Instrument Management

• Ensure proper functioning of

  laparoscopic towers, monitors, light sources, and electrosurgical units

  .
• Report equipment malfunctions promptly.
  
• Maintain OT instrument inventory and case cart readiness.
  

Infection Control & Safety

• Follow

  infection prevention and control (IPC)

  protocols.
• Ensure compliance with

  sterilization, disinfection, and biomedical waste management

  .
• Adhere to

  needle-stick injury prevention and exposure protocols

  .

Documentation & Compliance

• Maintain OT registers, surgical count sheets, and nursing notes.
  
• Ensure medico-legal documentation for OBG surgeries.
  
• Comply with

  NABH OT standards, patient safety goals, and audits

  .

Team Coordination & Training

• Coordinate with surgeons, anesthetists, OT technicians, and recovery nurses.
  
• Guide and support junior OT nurses and trainees.
  
• Participate in mock drills, audits, and continuous nursing education programs.
  

Skills & Competencies

• Strong expertise in

  OBG OT and laparoscopic procedures

• Knowledge of surgical instruments and laparoscopy equipment
  
• High level of aseptic practice and attention to detail
  
• Ability to work under pressure in emergency LSCS
  
• Good communication and teamwork skills
  

Qualification & Experience

• Qualification:

  GNM / B.Sc Nursing

• Registration:

  Valid State Nursing Council Registration

• Experience:

  3–6 years as OT Scrub Nurse with

  OBG & laparoscopic experience

• Experience in NABH-accredited hospital preferred
