Job Summary: We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented XML and ePub Operator to join our digital publishing team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for converting, formatting, and validating content into XML and ePub formats for digital distribution. This role is crucial in ensuring the production of high-quality, accessible, and standards-compliant digital publications. Key Responsibilities: Convert and format manuscripts or source files into XML and ePub formats. Ensure XML tagging follows appropriate DTDs (Document Type Definitions) and schema standards (e.g., JATS, DocBook, NLM). Validate ePub files (ePub2/ePub3) against industry standards using tools like FlightDeck, EPUBCheck, or Ace by DAISY. Troubleshoot and correct formatting issues in ePub files (reflowable and fixed-layout). Edit or create CSS and XHTML code to enhance ePub layout and style. Integrate multimedia elements (audio, video, interactivity) in ePub as required. Collaborate with content editors, designers, and developers to ensure smooth production workflow. Maintain documentation for processes and file specifications. Ensure all digital publications meet accessibility standards (WCAG, DAISY). Required Skills & Qualifications:Proficiency in XML, XHTML, CSS, and ePub standards. Familiarity with ePub creation tools like Sigil, Adobe InDesign, Calibre, or Oxygen XML Editor. Understanding of DTDs, schemas, and metadata standards (ONIX, Dublin Core). Experience with scripting (e.g., XSLT, Python) is a plus. Strong attention to detail and quality control. Good organizational and time-management skills. Ability to handle multiple projects under tight deadlines. Preferred Qualifications:Degree or diploma in Publishing, Computer Science, Digital Media, or related field. Experience in academic, educational, or trade publishing.
