Scrub Nurse for Operation Theatre

The scrub nurse role is pivotal for a surgical team to work effectively and perform a successful operation. Here are some duties of a scrub nurse:

• Assisting the patient during all stages of surgery: The scrub nurse provides patient care before, during and after a surgical operation. They also help patients and their attendants understand the procedure, and answer questions related to the treatment.
• Checking all equipment before the surgery: Prior to the scheduled surgery, scrub nurses prepare the operation room by ensuring the availability of all medical equipment and supplies. They also sterilise and count different tools, gowns, scrubs and other instruments for record keeping.
• Helping surgeons and assistant surgeons prepare for the surgery: Scrub nurses help other members of the team, such as the surgeon and assistant surgeon, prepare for surgery by assisting them in putting on sterile gowns and gloves. They also help drape the patient using towels and sheets, as per the routine.
• Assembling emergency and surgical materials for easier access: Just before the surgery commences, scrub nurses gather tools such as blades, needles, suction tubes, cautery cords and mayo stands near the table. They place this equipment in the right position to ensure easy access during the procedure.
• Supporting the surgeons during the surgery: Scrub nurses ensure hygiene during surgical operations by following medical protocols for operating rooms. They help surgeons perform the procedure by passing the required tools to the surgeon, responding to hand signals and medical terminology for specific instruments, and maintaining sterility.
• Performing post-surgery checks: After the surgery is complete, scrub nurses check the number of instruments remaining, remove remaining tools, help patients dress and transfer the patient to their room. They monitor the patient's condition and follow post-surgery instructions given by the surgeon.
• Documenting patient information: Scrub nurses are responsible for documenting the supplies used during the procedure. They also update the medical chart and inform patients, and their attendants about post-surgery care.
