The Opportunity Root’s Director, Government Relations, advances our strategic and commercial priorities by shaping policy outcomes and trusted relationships across federal and state governments. This role translates Root’s technology‑driven model into clear policy positions, partners across Legal, State Management, Business Development, Finance, Marketing, and Communications, and ensures alignment between marketplace innovation and evolving laws and regulations. Success looks like credible thought leadership with regulators and policymakers, proactive influence on multi‑state legislative and regulatory agendas, and timely, transparent communication that enables sound business decisions. The Director will steward Root’s engagement in trade associations, oversee PAC strategy and activity, and manage external advisors to deliver measurable outcomes for Root and our customers. Salary Range : $140,000 - $180,000 (STI & LTI Eligible) How You Will Make An Impact Lead Root’s multi‑state legislative and regulatory strategy in collaboration with Legal and cross‑functional leaders. Develop clear, innovative policy positions that reflect Root’s consumer‑centric, technology‑forward approach. Build and maintain trusted relationships with elected/appointed officials and insurance regulators. Serve as Root’s primary liaison to federal and state trade associations; influence association agendas. Provide timely analysis and guidance to internal partners on legislative/regulatory developments. Oversee and direct external counsel, consultants, and lobbyists to achieve targeted outcomes. Guide PAC strategy, including giving priorities and fundraising plans, in line with Root values and compliance. Coordinate response and resolution of escalated inquiries from government authorities. Align messaging with Marketing/Communications to ensure policy priorities reinforce the Root brand. Establish frameworks, policies, and plans that ensure compliance while enabling business growth. What You Will Need To Succeed Credible experience influencing government, political, or public advocacy outcomes in multi‑state contexts; insurance regulatory fluency or fast learner. Demonstrated record of earning trust with elected/appointed officials and regulators. Strategic communicator with exemplary writing, brief‑building, and storytelling skills. Empathetic, inclusive leadership; able to convene diverse stakeholders to common outcomes. Strong judgment, ethics, and professionalism representing Root externally. Program and project management excellence; comfortable leading through change and ambiguity. Tech‑savvy advocate who leverages modern tools and data to plan, mobilize, and measure impact. Effective team collaborator across functions and levels; manages multiple priorities with urgency. Ability to travel nationally (approximately 1–2 trips per month, typically 1–2 days each). Experience in regulated or state‑regulated industries, and/or multi‑state lobbying, is a plus.
