Job Description

Position Summary

The Professor of Paediatrics is a senior academic and clinical leader responsible for directing educational, research, and clinical activities within the Department of Paediatrics. The role involves teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students, providing expert paediatric care, guiding research, and ensuring high standards of medical education and patient outcomes.

The ideal candidate should demonstrate leadership, academic excellence, and extensive clinical expertise in paediatrics, with a strong commitment to teaching, research, and institutional development.

Key ResponsibilitiesTeaching and Academic Duties

  • Deliver lectures, tutorials, clinical demonstrations, and bedside teaching for undergraduate (MBBS) and postgraduate (MD Paediatrics) students.
  • Design, develop, and update the paediatric curriculum as per NMC guidelines.
  • Supervise and mentor postgraduate residents and junior faculty members in teaching, clinical work, and research.
  • Conduct and evaluate theory, practical, and viva examinations.
  • Organize academic activities including CME programs, conferences, seminars, and workshops.
  • Foster innovative and student-centered teaching methods using simulation and digital tools.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive patient care in outpatient, inpatient, neonatal, and paediatric intensive care units (NICU/PICU).
  • Supervise and guide residents and junior doctors in the management of paediatric cases.
  • Perform and oversee diagnostic and therapeutic paediatric procedures.
  • Lead clinical audits, case discussions, and mortality/morbidity reviews.
  • Ensure adherence to ethical standards, infection control, and hospital policies.

Research and Academic Development

  • Conduct independent and collaborative research in child health, neonatology, or related subspecialties.
  • Publish research findings in national and international peer-reviewed journals as per NMC requirements.
  • Supervise postgraduate dissertation work and encourage evidence-based practice.
  • Seek research grants and promote departmental research culture.

Administrative and Leadership Responsibilities

  • Oversee the academic, clinical, and administrative functioning of the Department of Paediatrics.
  • Mentor and appraise faculty members, residents, and other staff.
  • Participate in institutional committees and contribute to accreditation and quality assurance processes.
  • Coordinate with hospital administration to maintain standards of paediatric services.
  • Represent the department in academic forums, regulatory inspections, and university affairs.

Qualifications and RequirementsEducational Qualifications

  • Essential: MD (Paediatrics) / DNB (Paediatrics) from an institution recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
  • Desirable: Ph.D. or fellowship in Paediatric Subspecialties (e.g., Neonatology, Paediatric Cardiology, or Critical Care).

Experience (as per NMC norms)

  • Minimum 8 years of teaching experience in Paediatrics after obtaining the postgraduate degree, including 5 years as an Associate Professor in the subject.
  • Minimum 4 research publications in indexed national or international journals, as per latest NMC guidelines.
  • Demonstrated experience in guiding postgraduate students and leading departmental activities.

Skills and Competencies

  • Comprehensive knowledge of paediatric medicine and neonatal care.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and mentoring abilities.
  • Proficiency in teaching, clinical supervision, and academic administration.
  • Research aptitude with a good publication record.
  • Ability to foster teamwork and maintain high ethical standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven record of participation in national or international paediatric conferences.
  • Experience in curriculum design, accreditation, and medical education technology.
  • Recognition or awards for contributions to child health or medical education.
