Phlebotomist

Role & responsibilities

Blood Collection:

1. Perform venipuncture or finger stick to obtain blood samples from patients and clients, following aseptic techniques and safety protocols.

2. Verify patient identity, labeling samples correctly and ensuring the appropriate quantity of blood is collected.

3. Travel to patient's home s to collect blood samples in a timely and professional manner.

Specimen Handling:

1. Prepare and handle blood specimens according to established laboratory procedures.

2. Ensure proper labeling, storage and transport of collected samples to maintain sample integrity.

Patient Interaction:

1. Provide a high level of patient care, including explaining the phlebotomy process, addressing patient concerns and maintaining a calm and reassuring demeanor.

2. Collect relevant medical history and information when necessary.

Equipment Maintenance:

1. Maintain and clean phlebotomy equipment, including needles, syringes and specimen containers.

2. Report any equipment malfunctions and request repairs or replacements as needed.

Infection Control:

1. Follow infection control procedures, including proper h and hygiene, glove use and disposal of bio hazardous materials.

2. Maintain a sterile and sanitary work environment.

Data Documentation:

1. Record and maintain accurate records of blood collections, including patient information, collection date and type of test ordered.

2. Complete requisition forms and enter data into the hospital's electronic health records (EHR) system.

Quality Assurance:

1. Participate in quality assurance and control activities to ensure the accuracy and integrity of specimens collected.

2. Assist in maintaining compliance with regulatory standards.

Patient Privacy:

1. Adhere to patient confidentiality and privacy standards, including HIPAA regulations.

2. Safeguard the security of patient information.

Emergency Response:

1. Be prepared to respond to adverse reactions, complications, or medical emergencies during phlebotomy procedures.

2. Follow established emergency protocols.

Required Skill Sets:

1. Knowledge of phlebotomy techniques, safety procedures and medical terminology.

2. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

3. Attention to detail and the ability to work with a high degree of accuracy.

4. Strong organizational and time-management skills.
