You love building things that didn’t exist yesterday—and making sure they still work tomorrow. You’re not just an engineer—you’re a builder, product thinker, and problem-solver. You thrive in zero-to-one environments, enjoy wearing multiple hats, and get excited about making things that matter. We’re Open Legal , and we’re on a mission to democratize access to justice . We’re building tools that remove complexity, reduce barriers, and make legal services more accessible for everyone. Right now, we’re laying the foundation. The architecture, the infrastructure, the first real lines of code. You’ll help build it—but you’ll also stick around to scale it, fix it, and improve it. What You’ll Do Build 0 → 1 Design and build core features across the stack. Architect systems that scale, and ship code that solves real problems. Prepare for scale As the product grows, you’ll help maintain and refactor what we built—yes, even your own legacy code. Collaborate with design and leadership No PM layers here. You’ll work directly with founders and designers to define how the product works. Own the stack Help choose the right tools, build dev workflows, and set engineering best practices for the rest of the team. Wear every hat Some days you’ll code. Others you’ll debug infrastructure, write docs, test edge cases, or join a customer call to understand what’s broken. What We’re Looking For 3–7 years of experience building and shipping production software Demonstrated understanding or hands-on experience with large language models (LLMs), agentic frameworks, autonomous agents, or Chain-of-Thought prompting—or a proven strong interest and aptitude for rapidly learning these advanced AI technologies Comfortable across the stack (or excellent in one area and curious about the rest) You’ve worked in fast-paced or startup environments and know how to operate with uncertainty You care about usability, performance, and long-term maintainability You’re not afraid of legacy code—you’re just not nostalgic about it either Bonus Points If You Have: Experience with our stack (e.g., TypeScript, Node.js, React, Postgres, etc. Worked closely with design to ship great UX Refactored or scaled early-stage codebases A strong sense of ownership and a bias for action Why Open Legal? Mission-driven work: Help build the infrastructure that makes legal services more accessible High impact, low bureaucracy: Your work ships fast and matters Design-led, engineering-first: We believe great UX and great code go hand in hand Total ownership: You’ll help define how we build and scale from day one Remote and flexible: We care about results, not where you log in from
