Turning is a machining operation, in which excess material is removed from a rotating workpiece. This distinguishes it from milling and drilling, where the workpiece remains stationary and the tool bit rotates. In turning operations, a workpiece is held in place by a chuck mounted on a rotating spindle or tailstock driven by a motor. The cutting edge of the tool bit - which may be made of various materials depending on the machining operation - is fed into the workpiece, thus cutting away the unwanted material in the form of chips (also known as swarf). There are four main types of turning lathe featuring varying levels of automation. These are the manual lathe, the semi-automatic lathe (the operator is required to position and guide the cutting tool), the automatic lathe (the operator is responsible for the initial setup of the machine) and the CNC (or computer numerical control) lathe, which automatically executes the instructions contained in programs selected by the operator. Weld thin-gauge materials (as low as 0.2 mm) commonly used in bellows and flexible metal joints. Read and interpret technical drawings, WPS (Welding Procedure Specifications), and blueprints . Prepare components by cutting, cleaning, and fitting parts prior to welding . Inspect and ensure weld quality as per ASME, ISO, or customer specifications . Carry out repair welds and rework as necessary under minimal supervision. Work with fixtures, jigs, and positioning tools to ensure precision and repeatability. Maintain clean work environment and equipment , including welding torches and machines. Adhere to safety standards, PPE usage , and company policies at all times. Maintain accurate records of welding work performed (logbooks, inspection reports).
