Medical Scribing & Coding Internship

What You'll Do

As a Medical Scribing Intern, you'll shadow healthcare providers and assist with real-time documentation of patient encounters, gaining invaluable exposure to clinical workflows. This role is perfect for pre-med students or those pursuing healthcare administration, offering a blend of observation, clerical support, and professional development. Key responsibilities include:

• Accompanying physicians during patient visits to accurately document medical histories, physical exams, diagnoses, treatment plans, and follow-up instructions in real-time using Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems (e.g., Epic or Cerner).
• Organizing and preparing patient charts, lab results, and diagnostic reports for efficient provider access.
• Entering data into EHR software, ensuring compliance with HIPAA regulations and maintaining patient confidentiality.
• Assisting with basic administrative tasks, such as scheduling follow-ups or printing educational materials.
• Observing and learning clinical decision-making processes to anticipate provider needs and streamline workflows.
• Participating in team huddles and feedback sessions to refine scribing skills and understand interdisciplinary care.

• Proficient in medical terminology; completion of relevant coursework or certification (e.g., from The American College of Medical Scribe Specialists) is a plus.
• Excellent typing speed (60+ WPM) and familiarity with Microsoft Office, word-processing, and database tools.
• Strong communication and listening skills, with the ability to multitask under pressure while maintaining accuracy.
• Reliable, professional demeanor with a passion for patient care and healthcare efficiency. No prior scribing experience requiredwe provide comprehensive on-the-job training!

What You'll Do

In this Medical Coding Internship, you'll work alongside certified coders to review medical records, assign accurate codes, and learn the intricacies of billing compliance. This role emphasizes practical training in inpatient/outpatient coding, ideal for those pursuing certifications like CPC or CCS. Core responsibilities include:

• Reviewing patient charts, physician notes, and diagnostic reports to assign appropriate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II codes for procedures, diagnoses, and services.
• Assisting with claim preparation, error identification, and submission processes using coding software (e.g., 3M Encoder or Quadax).
• Conducting practice audits on sample records to ensure compliance with HIPAA, Medicare/Medicaid guidelines, and payer-specific rules.
• Shadowing senior coders during appeals and denials resolution to understand revenue cycle impacts.
• Participating in timed coding exercises and feedback sessions to improve speed and accuracy.
• Supporting administrative tasks like data entry and maintaining coding reference libraries.

What We're Looking For

• Enrollment in a medical billing/coding program or related field (e.g., Health Information Management); recent graduates welcome.
