About MAYA MAYA is an upcoming fashion brand based in Amsterdam that blends timeless craftsmanship with the modern aesthetic of Western fashion. The Role We are seeking a talented, creative, and passionate Fashion Designer to join MAYA. As the first designer for the brand, you will play a key role in shaping the creative vision through globally wearable collections that combine traditional textiles with modern design. This is a freelance/project-based role with potential for long-term collaboration as the brand expands. Key Responsibilities: Design & Conceptualisation: Develop about 20 original ready-to-wear designs (primarily womenswear) incorporating heritage-inspired fabrics and techniques such as Chikankari embroidery, Silk, Phulkari, Bandhni, Chiffon, Bagru print, etc. Technical Expertise: Create detailed tech packs and ensure designs are production-ready, with a strong understanding of fabric properties, stitch techniques, and garment construction. Collaboration: Work closely with the founder for creative guidance while driving your designs independently, ensuring alignment with the brand’s aesthetic and values. Sourcing & Fabrication: Assist in sourcing fabrics and trims while balancing budget, function, and design appeal. Production Oversight: Liaise with manufacturers to ensure quality, accuracy, and timely delivery, maintaining the integrity of designs and techniques. Trend Research: Stay ahead of global fashion trends to ensure each collection is fresh, relevant, and aligned with the brand vision. Requirements: Experience: Minimum 1 year in fashion design (university projects and internships considered), preferably in ready-to-wear, with a strong understanding of heritage textiles. Technical Skills: Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or other design software, plus a strong grasp of garment construction and fabric behaviour. Design Vision: Ability to merge traditional craftsmanship with contemporary fashion in innovative ways. Attention to Detail: Highly organised, with a commitment to quality. Independence: Comfortable working autonomously while collaborating effectively. Communication: Strong verbal and written skills in English. Flexibility & Adaptability: Willingness to take on multiple roles in a growing brand. Passion for Craftsmanship: Genuine interest in preserving and reinterpreting textile traditions for a global audience.
