Role Description This is a full-time on-site role located in Chennai as a Product Photographer at Matkatus. As a Product Photographer, your day-to-day tasks will involve capturing high-quality images of various products and editing, ensuring accurate representation and maintaining consistent visual standards. You will be responsible for setting up and arranging product displays, organizing and maintaining a photography studio, and collaborating with the creative team to ensure the images effectively communicate the desired message. The Apparel Designer at Matkatus will lead the creative vision and development of our stitched-apparel line as we transition from being a predominantly fabric-driven brand into a holistic handcrafted-fashion label. This role blends artisanal textile appreciation , fashion innovation , and global aesthetics , giving the designer ample freedom to experiment with our signature handloom and handcrafted fabrics. The designer will be responsible for conceptualizing, designing, and developing apparel collections that embody Matkatus’ ethos: authentic craftsmanship , sustainable production , and timeless, wearable style . Responsibilities Creative & Design Ownership Develop seasonal and capsule collections using Matkatus’ curated handwoven and handcrafted fabrics. Create design boards, sketches, patterns, and prototypes rooted in Indian textile heritage yet suited for contemporary wardrobes. Innovate with new silhouettes, drapes, trims, and surface details while maintaining the integrity of the artisanal fabrics. Product Development Collaborate with pattern masters, tailors, and suppliers to take designs from concept to final production. Ensure fit, comfort, durability, and finish quality align with global retail standards. Maintain a clear understanding of fabric behavior, shrinkage, fall, texture, and care requirements. Brand & Customer Alignment Build collections that resonate with Matkatus patrons worldwide —customers who value craftsmanship, sustainability, and individuality. Translate customer preferences and feedback into design refinements and product extensions. Operational Collaboration Work closely with buying, merchandising, and production teams to ensure feasibility, costing, and timely execution. Assist in photo shoots, storytelling, and marketing content creation to present the collection cohesively. Qualifications Educational Background Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design, Apparel Design, or equivalent from a recognized institute (NIFT, NID, Pearl, Srishti, etc. preferred but not mandatory). Technical Skills Strong sketching and illustration abilities (digital and hand-drawn). Knowledge of garment construction , draping, pattern making, and fit correction. Expertise in working with handloom fabrics , block prints, natural-dyed textiles, and other artisanal materials. Ability to create tech packs , measurement charts, and clear production instructions. Familiarity with design tools such as: Adobe Illustrator / Photoshop CorelDRAW or equivalent CAD for pattern-making (optional but beneficial) Understanding of fabric behavior , fall, weight, shrinkage, grain, and handling techniques. Experience requirements 2–5 years of experience in apparel or textile design (open to strong freshers with an exceptional portfolio). Prior experience working with: Boutique or craft-led fashion brands Sustainable or handmade clothing lines Small to mid-scale production setups Experience collaborating with pattern masters, tailors, and production units is highly desirable.
