Role & responsibilities Receive biological samples from phlebotomists, couriers, and collection centers, including blood, urine, and tissue samples. Compare each specimen with its corresponding test request form to confirm the patients identity and the tests requested. Check that the samples are properly labeled, packaged, and meet the lab's acceptance criteria, such as collection time and specimen volume Assign a unique accession number to each specimen, which is used for tracking and auditing throughout the testing and storage process. Scan and link any physical requisition forms and relevant clinical information to the digital patient record. Maintain accurate and detailed logs of all specimens received and processed for regulatory and quality assurance purposes. Generate and affix unique barcode labels to each specimen container for automated tracking and processing. Sort and organize specimens by type and priority for different testing departments, such as microbiology or histology. Perform initial sample preparation tasks like centrifuging blood to separate serum or plasma. Prepare and document samples that need to be sent out to other laboratories for specialized testing. Properly store excess sample portions for future use or according to a designated disposal schedule.
