1. Understanding Process Requirements Identify the chemical process parameters (temperature, pressure, flow, level, pH, conductivity, etc.). Define the required accuracy, response time, and redundancy for instruments. 2. Selection of Instruments Sensors & Transmitters: Pressure, temperature, flow, and level transmitters. Control Valves: Regulating flow and pressure. Analyzers: Gas chromatographs, pH meters, oxygen analyzers. Flow Meters: Coriolis, electromagnetic, vortex, ultrasonic. Safety Instruments: Pressure relief valves, emergency shutdown (ESD) systems. 3. Instrumentation Layout & Hook-up Develop Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID). Define Instrument Loop Diagrams (ILDs). Create instrument location and routing plans. Prepare hook-up drawings (process and pneumatic/electrical). 4. Control System Design DCS (Distributed Control System) for centralized process control. PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers) for automation. SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) for remote monitoring. 5. Hazardous Area Classification Choose instruments that comply with ATEX, IECEx, or NFPA standards. Use intrinsically safe (IS) or explosion-proof devices where required. 6. Cable Routing & Installation Define cable tray layouts and segregation (power, signal, control). Follow grounding and shielding techniques for noise reduction. Ensure proper installation of junction boxes and marshalling panels. 7. Safety & Compliance HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Study) for risk assessment. Implement SIS (Safety Instrumented Systems) as per IEC 61511. Meet industry standards: API, ASME, ISA, ISO, IEC. 8. Commissioning & Maintenance Develop loop check and functional test procedures. Implement calibration and maintenance schedules. Utilize smart instrumentation with HART, Fieldbus, or Wireless protocols
