One PhD position is available for self-funded students (with CSIR NET or other fellowships), starting from August 2026, in the broad area of Complex Systems Research. Institute funding (from IISER Kolkata) is also available for students without their own fellowship. Our current focus lies at the interface of Physics, Cognitive Science and Computer Science. We use theoretical models and agent-based simulations to understand how individual actions, informed by learning, affect collective behaviour at the level of the population. We are also broadly interested in developing mathematical models of decision-making informed by different learning mechanisms. During the course of his/her PhD, the student will get the opportunity to learn about statistical physics of learning and inference, game theory, stochastic processes, network (graphical) models. Students with a background in Physics or Applied Math or Quantitative Biology with a strong interest in programming, inherent curiosity about the world and a willingness to work on unconventional problems are encouraged to email me directly before applying . Role Description This is a full-time on-site role for a Doctoral Student at IISER Kolkata, located in Kolkata, India. The Doctoral Student will conduct high-level research in their chosen field of study, design mathematical and computational models. The candidate will actively engage in academic discussions, publish research findings, and participate in conferences and seminars. The role also involves collaborating with faculty members and contributing to teaching and mentoring undergraduate/masters students. Qualifications Strong academic background in a relevant field (e.g., Physics, Mathematics, or Quantitative Biology) Problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and methodical approach to experimental or computational tasks Master’s degree (or equivalent qualification) in a related field; prior research experience is an advantage Familiarity with scientific tools, software, or programming languages relevant to the area of research. Good knowledge of coding in Python and/or Mathematica is highly desirable.
