Key Roles and Responsibilities 3D Model Interpretation and Creation Create and interpret 3D models from files provided in formats like STEP, IGES, or SolidWorks. If only a physical sample is provided, take precise measurements and reverse-engineer it into a 3D model using CAD software. CNC Program Development Develop CNC programs for 3-axis VMC machines using CAM software (e.g., Mastercam, NX, Fusion 360). Select appropriate machining strategies based on material, geometry, and finish requirements. Setup and Operation Set up the VMC machine, including fixture and tool selection based on the job requirements. Run the machine and monitor the machining process, making adjustments as needed to achieve specified tolerances and finishes. Pre-Machining Process Knowledge Understand and perform part preparation such as cleaning, deburring, and marking reference datums. Verify raw material specifications and ensure correct stock selection. Tooling Expertise Select and install correct cutting tools, holders, and workholding devices. Optimize tool paths and feeds/speeds for improved cycle times and tool life. GD&T Interpretation Read and interpret engineering drawings with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing annotations to ensure part meets design intent. Apply GD&T principles during both modeling and inspection stages. Post-Machining Process Knowledge Check finished parts against dimensional and surface finish requirements. Document and report discrepancies or errors in the process. Conduct part deburring, cleaning, and any required secondary processes. Continuous Improvement & Documentation Maintain and update CNC program and process documentation. Suggest and implement process improvements to increase productivity, accuracy, and safety. Collaboration Work closely with design engineers, quality inspectors, and production team members to resolve issues and optimize outcomes.
