General Surgeon

Role & responsibilities

1. Clinical Care

• Perform comprehensive history-taking and physical examinations for pre- and postoperative patients.
  
• Assist in and independently perform minor surgical procedures under supervision.
  
• Manage emergencies such as acute abdomen, trauma, soft tissue infections, and postoperative complications.
  
• Formulate differential diagnoses and develop evidence-based management plans.
  
• Participate actively in ward rounds, preoperative assessments, and postoperative care.
  

2. Operative Responsibilities

• Assist consultants in major surgeries (e.g., laparotomy, appendectomy, cholecystectomy, hernia repair).
  
• Independently perform procedures appropriate to training level and hospital policy.
  
• Ensure accurate and timely documentation of operative notes.
  

3. Emergency & On-Call Duties

• Provide 24/7 emergency coverage according to roster.
  
• Triage and manage surgical emergencies in emergency department.
  
• Stabilize critically ill patients and coordinate transfers to ICU or higher-level care.
  

4. Patient Management & Coordination

• Coordinate diagnostic investigations and interpret results.
  
• Communicate effectively with consultants, anesthetists, radiologists, and nursing staff.
  
• Educate patients and families regarding surgical conditions and postoperative care.
  

5. Supervision & Teaching

• Supervise interns and junior residents in clinical duties and procedural skills.
  
• Participate in departmental teaching programs, morbidity and mortality (M&M) meetings, and case discussions.
  

6. Administrative & Documentation Duties

• Maintain accurate medical records in compliance with hospital and legal standards.
  
• Ensure timely completion of discharge summaries, operative notes, and clinical reports.
  
• Assist in development and implementation of clinical protocols and quality-improvement initiatives.
  

7. Professional Development

• Stay updated with recent advances in general surgery.
  
• Attend relevant workshops, seminars, and training sessions.
  
• Participate in clinical audits and research activities.
