Model validation primarily involves validation of models used to measure capital requirements for Group and various subsidiaries. Our work combines annual review of model changes and model results for various subsidiaries subject to Solvency II or the Swiss regulatory solvency test, and topical validation topics which are of interest to Chubb management and our supervisory authorities including financial regulators and Lloyd's. We may also validate models outside of capital modeling in response to demand that may arise. Validation actuaries' primary focus is to understand and challenge the actuarial and economic methods and assumptions used in models, and to validate other areas including governance, data quality, documentation and the understanding & compliance of model teams with regulatory standards. It involves decomposing methods from first principles, identifying underlying assumptions either by reference to the literature and / or by inventive thinking.
