Battery Engineer Marine System Intern

As an R&D Intern - Battery System focused on marine battery modeling at ABB Marine & Ports, your role will involve developing advanced battery system models, evaluating lifecycle performance, and designing an optimized battery sizing tool. This internship can potentially lead to an industrial PhD research program in energy storage and marine electrification. Your key responsibilities will include: - Developing battery system models for shipboard power applications using MATLAB, Python, or other relevant programming languages. - Analyzing and simulating battery performance, degradation, and lifecycle estimation under marine operational conditions. - Documenting battery (ESS) functions, features, and integration strategies into shipboard power plants. - Creating a battery sizing tool to optimize energy storage selection based on power plant requirements and lifecycle economics. - Collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure proper integration of battery systems. - Researching advanced energy storage technologies, control strategies, and their applications in maritime environments. - Participating in the development of an industrial PhD research roadmap, identifying key topics for long-term investigation. Qualifications required for this role: - Student of Engineering disciplines such as Electrical, Energy Systems, or Mechanical. - Proficiency in programming with MATLAB, Python, or other relevant simulation tools. - Basic understanding of battery modeling techniques including electrochemical, thermal, and ageing models. - Familiarity with battery lifecycle analysis, degradation mechanisms, and economic assessment methodologies. - Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to develop mathematical models and optimize system performance. - Comfortable communicating in English.
